Call for Host Families
BRING HOME A BIG BROTHER OR SISTER AND BRING FRENCH, ITALIAN OR SPANISH CULTURE TO LIFE!
Why not volunteer to host an international student from France, Italy or Spain next year? We have a small group of delightful students coming to Australia for 11 weeks to immerse in local Australian culture, experience our High schools, sports, environment and lifestyle. All these international students are around 15 or 16 years old, speak excellent English, have their own spending money, cover all school expenses, and we arrange all aspects of their program. They are looking forward to joining an Australian family for a short term cultural immersion stay. It’s fun and interesting to help these young people achieve their Australian dream. If you would like to know more, please email your interest to ICM on info@icm-education.com.au or call Georgie or Anja on 1800 500 501, or visit our website www.icm-education.com.
SA Space Mission Project.
Science News
Throughout the last two terms, three Year 6/7 students (James Ostrognay, Sebastian Hartas and Frank Pliszko) elected to be on a committee for the SA Space Mission Project. This project is a competition for SA schools exclusively to enter in an experiment that could go into space in 2019. Three successful applicants will be chosen to have their experiment go into space.
The students have worked very hard over the past six months with industry experts to research, design and create a prototype of a space debris collection device that can catch space debris of up to 2mm squared. They were required to complete an 8 page portfolio and a 5 minute multimedia presentation based on their experimental design. Students used the Engineering Design Model process to create their final prototype.
On Tuesday 26th September, James Ostrognay attended the International Astronautical Congress, a world-wide event with over 4500 industry experts attending from many countries. James presented our experiment to a number of industry experts at the conference who were very impressed with his knowledge and understanding. He was also interviewed by a news reporter from the ABC and answered questions about the intricacies of the experiment.
This has been a fantastic learning experience for the boys involved. We will find out if our experiment has been successful by the beginning of Term 4. If it is chosen, the students will have an opportunity to make their device with the aid of industry experts and a budget will be allocated to make their prototype. It will then be sent into space and monitored in 2019. Fingers crossed!

Did you know that 12 of our Year 6/7 students participated in the Annual Interschool Hiragana Competition hosted here at West Beach? It is a chance for the students to show off their quick recall of the Hiragana characters in a fun yet competitive way!
There were 12 teams competing and the competition was very close and very intense! Our students did a fantastic job and our teams did us proud placing 3rd, 4th & 7th. Yokudekimashita! Well Done!
Room 11 students have also been busy participating in the ‘Table for Two Onigiri’ project. Onigiri (rice ball) is a traditional and healthy snack in Japan This project is featured to celebrate rice, one of the major Japanese agricultural products, and to showcase the Japanese tradition of making onigiri for others with love. Anyone can participate by making onigiri and then posting a photo of it to the Table for Two website.
http://jp.tablefor2.org/campaign/onigiri/en/
The sponsoring organisations will then provide 5 school meals to children in need for each photo posted on the website. We had great fun making them and felt good that our hard work helped other children in need. Our photos will provide over 150 meal donations. Well done! Photos can be uploaded between October 5th-15th so why not try them out at home and upload some pictures!

Round and Adjust or Compensate
Familiarity with splitting, friendly numbers and rounding leads naturally to being able to round and adjust.
48 + 37
Round the 48 to 50
Now its easy to add 37 to the friendly number 50 and arrive at 87.
But I have added 2 too many so must not adjust by subtracting 2, giving me the answer 85.
There are a few significant points to be made here:
1. Notice that I had an estimated answer as part of my first step.
2. I did not have to do any cumbersome regrouping or trading of tens and ones.
3. This way is easy to do without a pencil and paper and mirrors they types of strategies that most adults use on the run.
Round and compensate is very similar, only the adjustment happens at a different point. The +2 needed to round 48 to 50 is then compensated by subtracting 2 from 37.
We don't always round to friendly numbers. For 27 + 23 we would take 2 from 7 and add it to 23 not the landmark number addition 25 + 25 should be automatic.
SONG OF THE MONTHS FOR WEST BEACH PRIMARY - Room 7 & 9
This term room 7 and 9 have been learning about poetry. The poem we studied was called 'Song of the Months for South Australia' and it tells us about all the things that happen in each month of they year in SA. This poem had 11 stanzas and was a rhyming couplet, meaning it had rhyming words at the end of each line.
After all the learning about this poem we decided to create a poem together about all the fun and exciting things that go on each month at West Beach Primary School. We hope you enjoy it!

January brings us a new school year;
And in February the pool water is clear.
In March, our culture we share,
And we take our time to love and care.
In April poppies may be seen,
to show love for where the soldiers have been.
In May the pressure of the test may come,
And we all cheer because we are done.
We will sing and dance to the tune,
Because Music is Fun is here in crazy June.
We plant our seedlings in cold July,
But they won’t come up because they are shy.
In August our Book Week costumes are on display,
And we visit the elderly on that day.
The art of sport will be shown,
And in September we will follow the orange cone.
In lovely October the twilight market begins,
And we hang up all of our artwork with pins.
In November wedding bells will ring,
And Miss Saracino will marry her beloved king.
The concert day is long and we try our best,
But in December we are all ready for a long rest.
Enterprise Education- Room 11 and 14
For the past 9 weeks the two year 6/7 classes have been working in groups of 3 to create products to sell at Harbour Town. The groups then went to Harbour Town on the Friday of 22nd of September to promote and sell their products.
The students were given $40 to buy their equipment for their products, then had to earn back $40 by selling their products at Harbour Town to the public in order to break even as a minimum figure. Additionally, on Monday 25th of September students sold their remaining products at West Beach Primary.
Students had to create a group logo for their products, a poster to advertise their products around the school, and a radio ad. Mr. Kostantakis contacted fresh FM and three students, Lily, Sascha and Hasan went to record an ad inside Fresh FM station, which was then played on air to promote our Harbour Town sales day.
This project was an incredible opportunity for our classes, we learnt so much about what it takes to be successful in the world of business. We would like to thank Mr K and Ms Nesbitt for providing the opportunity for such an exciting learning opportunity. Thanks to all of the parents and community members who supported our teams as well, it was greatly appreciated.
