Stem Club 'Come and Try' Session

West Beach Primary School's STEMSEL Club operates on Mondays for students in Years 3-7.  The club meets in Room 12 from 3:30-5:00pm. There are 20 places available for students again for term 4. The club is currently inviting potential new members to attend a FREE 'Come and Try' session on Monday 18th September, 3:30pm to 5:00pm. Please see the attached document for further details. Students wishing to attend the Come and Try session are asked to register by calling the front office on 83567944.

The project for Monday's free session will be an electronic cricket that stops chirping if you move too close to it - using a light sensor.

We can accommodate up to 20 new students for the session but would like past students to come and help them.

STEMSEL stands for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Social Enterprise Learning.

Students will learn about how inventions can help people and then make a new and different STEM Interactive Project each week using STEMSEL Controllers and Graphical Programming. Make and code projects such as Alarm System with LED lights and buzzers, Street Light a light sensor, Temperature Controller with a fan and lamp, and many more.

All personnel running the program have had the appropriate DSCI screening approval and school leadership will be onsite whilst the program is operating.

SPORTS DAY CAKE STALL DONATIONS

Once again this year the Fundraising Committee will be conducting a cake stall.

All cake and biscuit donations will be gratefully received. Please include a list of ingredients (no nuts please), and bring on the day and drop off tomorrow morning.

BBQ, gelati, lolly bags, cake stall, drinks etc will be available on the day.

Hopefully the weather will be kind and all the students and families enjoy a wonderful day!

Exciting Acting Opportunity

West Beach Primary School students, staff and parents have been invited to participate in the filming of a commercial being produced by DECD (the Education Department). The commercial will be filmed by Heesom casting.

Heesom castings are South Australia’s leading casting agent and have been putting children and adults in Films and TV commercials for over 18 years.

Along with casting Feature Films such as Storm Boy (Geoffery Rush), the AFI Award Winning Look Both Ways and Closed For Winter starring Natalie Imbruglia we also cast kids films such as Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueburger, Anzac Girls (ABC), Deadline Gallipoli (Foxtel), Sam Fox: Extreme Adventures (Network 10) and of course Wolf Creek 1 & 2.

We are now currently in the process of casting this great campaign for The Department Of Education and would love to invite West Beach Primary School to be involved. In an effort to celebrate all that is South Australian we want to feature as many little SA students, their parents and teachers as possible to bring this inspiring campaign to life.

It would be lovely if we could ask for your assistance, as we have done in the past, by getting the word out to your school community by providing students, parents and teachers with the attached flyer. It includes links to our website where our full credentials can be found as well as full project details and instructions for how parents and teachers can apply to be part of this campaign.

We are shooting in the school holidays so hoping we can connect with the community over the next 5 days (us liaising directly with anyone who sends expressions of interest back to us). Do you think this could be possible? And would the school be willing to distribute amongst teachers, parents and students?

Sun Safety

Students and parents are reminded that as we are now heading into warmer weather, it is important that staff and students are 'Sun Smart' and wear a hat at school. Starting term 4 all students are required to wear a hat at play times. Parents are asked to ensure that their children have a hat (or two) at school. Please feel free to drop into the front office to purchase hats before the end of term in readiness. Hats can be purchased at a cost of $8.50 - $12.00.

Chinese Saturday School Program

My name is Gracie Grant. I am a native Chinese speaker and have been living in Adelaide for over 10 years. I have been working as an Educator in Childcare centres for the past 5 years and have a Diploma in Children’s Services.

I will run a Chinese program at the West Beach Primary school hall on Saturdays from 1:30 to 3:30 from next term. All students from reception to year 7 are welcome. Students who are beginners will learn Pin Ying and characters with visual prompts. Picture books will be used more often so that the student will be able to recognise and memorise it easily. Students with a Chinese background will be taught more complex Chinese such as making sentences or writing a short story.

This Chinese lesson will run in Mandarin with English when required. Students will learn Chinese from text book, songs, games, craft and cultural activities.

Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process. Independent international studies have shown the brains of bilingual people operate differently to single language speakers and learning additional languages improves overall student results.

If your child is interested in learning Chinese please contact me on 0452452272 before 10th October to secure a place or let me know if there is another time suits better for you. Each class will have a maximum of 25 students.

Cost per student will be $10.00 each lesson

I encourage term upfront payment as children’s learning is greatly enhanced by regular attendance.

Please contact me directly or complete the attached form and return it to the front office asap.
