Making Jewellery

Making a Racket in Class  - Designing and Making Jewellery - Year 9

If you come to W-wing you need to wear your earmuffs. Year 9 students have been making a lot of noise hammering on copper and brass.

They have been forging beautiful hammered bangles as part of learning surface decoration techniques in Designing and Making Jewellery.

This is one of the techniques that the students are learning. This term they have also be working with wire, bending, coiling on the Gizmo and making links.

Community Project

As part of their Community Project a group of Year10 students are taking on the restoration of The Musician’s sculpture, made as ‘An Artist in Schools’ project in 2003.

Broken up into teams, each group investigated a different aspect of the sculpture, presenting their findings to the rest. This included the history of the sculpture, information about the artist, along with the mosaic technique.

One group invited the artist, Jan Donaldson, to come along and talk about the sculpture, how it was made and the meaning behind The Musician’s. This gave students an insight into how public sculpture is made. Jan also talked about her work as an international artist.

Students have been hands on learning the mosaic technique, so they can then use their new skills to restore the sculpture.

Keep watching; as the work progresses updates will be included in the newsletter.
