Geography Excurison

On Tuesday 14th of May, the Year 8 students headed to Dandenong Creek. We followed the journey of the creek to 5 different locations, Patterson Lakes, Metro Village Dandenong, Cardinia Reservoir, Jells Park and lastly Emerald Lake.

Patterson Lake: We started our excursion at Patterson Lake, there we got to discuss about the floodgates, the canal system and how the lake use to be a swamp. The houses around the lake are modern and expensive looking, most of them having a boat, we also talked about the water boundaries it had to protect the marine life.

Metro Village Dandenong: At the Metro Village we got to sit down, eat lunch and talk about how the suburb changed over the many years. Surrounding the park we were eating at were many modern looking units, apartments and townhouses, we learnt that the Metro Village used to be a cattle yard/market and how the government spent around $400,000,000 to change it so it could be more family friendly and a much more safer neighbourhood.

Cardinia Reservoir: Cardinia Reservoir is the main source of water for the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne to drink, bathe or use for industrial reasons. We learnt how the forest area around the water keeps its safe to use and how it doesn’t flood. Around the water itself are high built rocks to prevent flooding, a small access gate for staff members on boats to check the water.

Jells Park: Jells Park is where we got to have our second lunch, we discussed the filtration system and how it protects and helps the creek and the animals/habitats living around Jells Park. After discussing we got to roam around the park and relax, whether it was sitting near the lake or playing with friends on the open grass area.

Emerald Lake: The last destination of the Dandenong creek journey was Emerald Lake where we talked about the habitat and the activities/facilities around Emerald Lake, out of the whole excursion this was my favourite place. We walked over the old train tracks and walked past the beautiful burgundy red trees and stopped on the lake bridge to take some photos. We continued walking until we reached an outdoor exercising area which was connected to a playground, after either working out or exhausting ourselves with the playground we headed back on the bus and back to school.

CYSMA in Primary Program

Every Tuesday afternoon a group of Year 10 students from St John’s have ventured out to St Francis de Sales to facilitate a CYSMA program for students in Grades 3 to 6. The program involves 100 students from St Francis de Sales and is focused on educating students on issues of homelessness, religion and the importance of gratitude and helping those in need. The program is run exclusively by St John’s students and offers them a great opportunity to further develop their skills as mentors.
