Musical Notes

Our last Music Soiree for 2017 was held on Thursday evening

Musical Notes

As we embark on the ending weeks of the school year, we still have many opportunities to celebrate as a community the success of our students throughout the year.

Final Music Soiree

On Thursday 23 November we celebrated our final Music Soiree for 2017. The night featured many students playing as soloists, duos, trios and small ensembles. There were some wonderful arrangements performed such as Brazil, Johnny Be Goode, Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and Gumbo Ya Ya’s Shake That Blues Thang. The Black Orleans paid tribute to Mr Charli Holoubek’s band and transcribed, arranged and performed a song in order to commemorate Mr Holoubek’s work and celebrate his retirement. The evening was a great success and I congratulate all students who participated, showing a great reflection of their dedication and community spirit.

Woodwind and Brass Immersion Program

This week students involved in Years 3 – 7 Woodwind and Brass Immersion Program in 2018 will receive a letter and application form for the program. I strongly encourage students to apply as we have seen the results of the program in our co-curricular ensembles in the senior years. Many Senior School students undertook the program in its beginning years and have continued with their involvement and learning their instruments.

End of Year Mass and Carols

On Monday 27 November, students who are involved in choirs will be participating in the end of year Mass and carols evening. We look forward to a fantastic community event.

Prospect Carols

On Friday 1 December, the Blackfriars Big Band Theory and Sound Benders will be performing at the Prospect Community Carols at Prospect Gardens on Flora Terrace. Students are to arrive at 5.30pm for set up and sound check with the event commencing at 7.00pm It is a wonderful community event and we hope to see many families.

Gumbo Ya Ya and the Blackfriars Stage Band

On Sunday 3 December, we celebrate our final performance for the current Year 12 cohort and Stage Band 1. All families are welcome to attend this final Music Community event at the Magill Club from 4.00 – 7.00pm. This is a very special occasion as the Stage Band will be supporting Mr Holoubek’s well-known band, Gumbo Ya Ya.

Generations in Jazz 2018

Following our recent Stage Band auditions for 2018, we have already begun preparing for Generations in Jazz for 2018. Further correspondence regarding the festival will be sent home once provided by Festival organisers. I would encourage families to book accommodation for 4 - 6 May 2018 as soon as possible if they wish to attend.
