Year 10 Work Experience 2019

A few students were out and about on Work Placement during the last week of Term 1.  Feedback from employers has been great; students have made valuable contributions to their work places.  Students also had a taste of the world of work, and a snapshot of life in their aspiring profession.

I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage year 10’s to undertake work experience this year, it is an invaluable opportunity, and students learn and develop many skills through the experience.  please see Jenny Zahra – Careers Advisor for further assistance.

Reminder to all year 10 students and parents the closing dates for the following placement dates close Friday May 24th 2019.

24th -28th June 2019 (LAST WEEK Term 2)

15th -19th July 2019 (FIRST WEEK Term 3)

Challenge Day - Rock Climbing

Do you have a fear of heights? Are you comfortable to step outside of your comfort zone and engage in a new experience?  These are a few of the questions 9B1 and 9B2 students had to contemplate, in many forms, last week when undertaking Challenge Day at Hard Rock, rock climbing centre in the city.

Part of Challenge Day is to offer new and exciting experiences to Year 9 students alongside their Humanities curriculum. These activities require the students to extend themselves, challenge their abilities and trust others all whilst engaging a ‘can do attitude’.

The fantastic attitudes of these classes to this event was awe inspiring. As a new teacher to the school, I was thrilled by their approach to this task. As you can see, from the photographs they truly demonstrated many of the attributes that Copperfield College prides itself on instilling within their students.

As a part of this activity, as with many others, students travel as a class from Watergardens, they are required to be responsible for following a schedule, having a valid Myki, following instructions, directions and being ambassadors for the college.

The initial response to the facilities at Hard Rock rock climbing centre sent a chorus of “Oh, my God” and “I’m not climbing up there” amongst the students. However, after hands on instructions about how to securely and safely put on a harness, how to thread the second part of a Figure-Eight knot, the importance of the correct attachments to the  carbiner and instructing the belayer on how to use the brake position when the climber is in motion, they were ready to begin on the beginners wall.  All the students quickly moved to the higher more challenging walls with gusto. The students all took the information on board and acted responsibly, safely and with respect for each other. All in all, it was an enthralling and exhilarating session.

Uniform

Welcome to Term Two and the beginning of the cold and ‘flu season.  As the temperature drops, students are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather.  Families need to consider buying their child the long sleeved/legged versions of the school uniform, if they haven’t already done so.  The College navy blue scarf is the only type allowed to be worn. Please note: hoodies, beanies and gloves are not permitted.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Many parents took the opportunity to attend Parent Teacher Interviews last term.  It is always an excellent time to discuss your child’s progress, both academic and social. A number of recommendations have come of those discussions and students are now acting upon them. At the end of this term, Semester One reports will be completed. Teachers are currently assessing students’ Common Assessment Tasks (CATS) and learning achievements in preparation for completing their reports later this term.

EVENTS

NAPLAN testing will affect all year 7s in weeks four and five of this term. Information sheets were given to students during home group. Our year 7s also have had an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo as part of the Science Curriculum.

On Monday the 13th Of May, all students of the College participated in Cross Country. We would like to congratulate E and H team students for their excellent participation and success in events for their age groups. A number of our students will now compete at a district level with students from other schools. Our students, as usual, put on a great display team spirit.

Royal Melbourne Hospital Music Excursion

On the 8th of May 2019, 23 students from Copperfield College Sydenham Campus went on an excursion to support the music festival held by the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s music therapy department. The aim of the festival is to make the hospital a more lively and enjoyable place for both patients and staff, as well as providing performance opportunities for school students to showcase their talents. The groups that performed were the year 9 rock band, the classical guitar ensemble and four vocalists with piano accompaniment.

When the students arrived they completed an interactive workshop on music therapy where they learnt what a significant impact music can have on patients’ quality of life for the duration of their stay. One patient expressed that it brought ‘something that is alive’ to the hospital and gave him hope throughout his cancer treatment.

The students then performed throughout the hospital: in the foyer, and through multiple wards; spreading joy around the hospital community. It was wonderful to see the smiles on the faces of patients, visitors and staff alike; it really made the hospital feel like a happier place.

Challenge Day

All B Team year 9 students have been enjoying the experience of Challenge Day this semester so far. In Term 1, students had the opportunity to conduct a humanities based city project where they were required to choose a specific social issue and investigate this by interacting with members of the public to gain knowledge of their thoughts and opinions.

This term students are focusing on facing physical and mental challenges by completing a range of exciting activities. Students will be partaking in ice skating, rock climbing, wheelchair basketball, self-defence and ninja warrior sessions as well as completing their CPR certificate and first aid training. We have witnessed students demonstrate great persistence and determination to face many of these challenges and love seeing the students’ big smiles when they accomplish these.

As you can see above, term 2 is going to be a busy term with many different events. If you have any queries at all, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s Team Leader.

100 Story Building Project at Copperfield College

Would you like to be involved with one of the biggest projects Copperfield College has ever seen? Are you creative enough to help? Are you game enough to get involved?

Come into a world of creative writing where ideas are endless and pens will never run out. In collaboration with the 100 Story Building we want to create a worldwide phenomenon and legacy that will change the face of education.

We have a room at the Kings Park campus that students will turn into a writing hub. In this room there shall never be a wrong or dull idea - as inspiration is oozing from the walls!

We need you to embark on a journey with a team of year 7 students to come up with a great concept for the design of the writing space. As a school it is spectacular that we get to help influence young writers and the extended community.

This will help you look amazing for your future university and job applications as you have helped build and design a world class story studio.

If you would like to be involved, then please tell your English teacher and for students at Kings Park you can also speak to Ms Grande.

For Sydenham students, you can also attend a brief meeting in the reading room next Tuesday 14/05 at the start of lunch with our epic student team, Miss Bell and Ms Zurawiecki.

Thank you for reading,

From the epic year 7 writers.
