Assessment

NAPLAN testing will be held over two weeks this year as it is being completed online. As usual students will complete testing for English and Maths over four separate sessions. The testing begins on Tuesday 14th May and the last classes will complete their testing on Friday 24th May.

All students should be busy completing Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) at the moment with all semester 1 work needing to be completed and assessed before our report writing day week 9.  If you are unsure about what your son or daughter should be doing you can contact their subject teachers at school.

Goals

An extended home group was held on Monday 6th May to get students involved with setting goals for their subjects and getting them to understand how they can achieve those goals. This is the first step in getting them to think about what they want to accomplish and then being able to show their growth when Student Led Presentations take place next term.

Exams

Exams are coming up for year 9 and 10. The year 10s begin their exams on June 3rd, while the year 9s begin on June 7th. Year 9s will be undertaking exams for four of their core subjects this year including English; Maths; Science and LOTE. These exams will take place in the morning and then two classes each day will need to complete the Morrisby Pathways survey after recess. This is in place to help guide each student to possible future pathways. During exam time students only need to be at school when they have an exam or are scheduled to do the Morrisby survey. They must be in full school uniform for every exam. Year 10 Exams will be held in the gym and year 9 exams will be held in the team rooms.

Pupil Free Days

Two pupil free days coming up this term are Curriculum Day on Wednesday 5th June and Correction Day on Friday 14th June.

Year 10 Tasmanian Camp

Permission slips were given out last week for our Year 10 Tasmania Trip in term 3. Students fly to Hobart where they are met by a coach and tour around for four days. They then sail back on the Spirit of Tasmania. Participation is restricted to the first 30 students who return their permission note and a non-refundable deposit of $100.00 to the general office.  In previous years, there have been students selected from the waiting list to go after a student has had to pull out.  If your child is interested in attending, and the 30 spots have been filled, please encourage your child to put their name down on the waiting list.

Brimbank Careers and Job Fair

Our year 10 attended the Brimbank Careers and Job Fair, on Wednesday 8th May, which gave them the opportunity to meet and discuss pathways with a variety of different University’s, TAFES, Government organisations, traineeships, apprenticeships and employment. The students found this experience extremely valuable as it allowed them to start thinking about their future pathways beyond life at the Kings Park campus.

PI Day

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (π) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.  The Students at the Kings Park celebrated Pi Day with Ms. Ong and Ms. Miller and participated in a friendly contest at lunch time on how many digits of the Pi they can recite. The competition was tough and had strong competitors who were able to recite Pi to 100 digits. Although the memory of all competitors were impressive, it was Violet from 8D1 who was able to recite Pi to 110 decimal places. The prizes for the competition included beach balls and several boxes of chocolate. All the students involved had a great time, scoring it a 3.14.

Year 11 Biology Ecolinc Excursion

On Monday, April 30th and Wednesday, May 1st, students studying units 1 and 2 biology travelled to Ecolinc in Bacchus Marsh. Here, students got the chance to extract and purify DNA from plants, make copies of it, identify it via gel electrophoresis and finally sequence their genome to identify their specimen.

All the students were very well behaved, worked well and had a good time.

100 Story Building Project at Copperfield College

Would you like to be involved with one of the biggest projects Copperfield College has ever seen? Are you creative enough to help? Are you game enough to get involved?

Come into a world of creative writing where ideas are endless and pens will never run out. In collaboration with the 100 Story Building we want to create a worldwide phenomenon and legacy that will change the face of education.

We have a room at the Kings Park campus that students will turn into a writing hub. In this room there shall never be a wrong or dull idea - as inspiration is oozing from the walls!

We need you to embark on a journey with a team of year 7 students to come up with a great concept for the design of the writing space. As a school it is spectacular that we get to help influence young writers and the extended community.

This will help you look amazing for your future university and job applications as you have helped build and design a world class story studio.

If you would like to be involved, then please tell your English teacher and for students at Kings Park you can also speak to Ms Grande.

For Sydenham students, you can also attend a brief meeting in the reading room next Tuesday 14/05 at the start of lunch with our epic student team, Miss Bell and Ms Zurawiecki.

Thank you for reading,

From the epic year 7 writers.
