Kings Park Campus Principal Message

A big ‘welcome back’ to everybody here at the Kings Park campus. Term 2 is an incredibly busy one; busy in a different sense to all the events we worked through last term.

End of Term 1 Assembly

A big thankyou to the leadership and SRC students ably led by Ms Dedes and Ms Tauber who put together a wonderful end of term assembly. We celebrated a successful term’s work and recognised students with RRR awards. Congratulations to all the students who also participated by presenting reports on class activities, excursions, extra curricular events and musical performances.

A special mention to all of the Year 7 students who earlier in the term participated in Iron Form Day. Iron Form Day was the culmination of the Transition Program and involved D and L Team Year 7 students and teachers. The Iron Form Day trophy was presented at the Assembly to the victorious 7D3 and their Home Group Teacher, Mr Dench. Later in the year, Year 7 students will also be attending their Camp.

The 2019 Western Chances Scholarship recipients were also acknowledged during the assembly. The Lord Mayor Sally Capp at a ceremony formally presented these students with their scholarships in late March.

Upgrades at Kings Park

Upgrades and beautification continue on campus again this term. The area outside C Team is in Stage 2, with new concrete seating, passive recreational spaces and some new turf. There have been some minor directional changes for staff and students whilst the work is underway, but the results will be worth the minor inconveniences.

Events for this term

Elevate Education presenters were on campus on April 29th to work with Year 9 students to discuss Memory and Mnemonics and then again on May 6th to work with Year 10 students to discuss time management. Both sessions focused on revision and exam techniques.

Last week, all students were given the opportunity to complete the online Attitudes To School survey. This survey gives us quality feedback from students about their perceptions of school life and it was great to see students taking their time reading and answering the questions.

The annual NAPLAN testing period for students in Year 7 and Year 9 begins Tuesday May 14 and concludes Thursday May 25th. This year NAPLAN will be conducted on line across the nation in 50% of the schools in Victoria. All students have been given an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the technology and to ready themselves for these online tests.

Our Year 9 and 10 students will be completing their semester 1 coursework over the next month or so in preparation for their Mid-Year Exams in June. It’s critical that parents continue to support and encourage their children to complete all CATs and assessments as well as progressive revision of the course so that they give themselves the best chance possible for a successful course outcome. Many of these strategies were discussed at parent/teacher/student interviews in the last week of Term 1.

Our Year 10 students are currently progressing through their Careers Classes with our Campus Pathways Leader, Ms. Bella Moore. This is an opportunity to explore the world of employment and educational pathways in preparation for VCE/VET/VCAL course selection next term. Year 10 students have also signed up for the subjects they would like to experience on the Year 10 Careers Day on June 12th on the Delahey Campus.

The Year 9 into Year 10 Pathways Information Evening was held on Tuesday April 30th at the Delahey campus. Again, this was an opportunity for some forward planning and family discussion around the best subjects to suit the needs of our students’ aspirations.  Students and their families were also given information about the new DET initiative – the Morrisby Profiling Tool. All year 9 students will have the chance to complete a series of on line careers modules during Year 9 exam week. Students will then be allocated an external careers counsellor who will discuss their profile with them in the lead up to 2020 subject selection. As per NAPLAN, students will be given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the on line modules by completing a short readiness session in the lead up to the profiling.

This term junior campuses also begin to engage in ABCN programs. On Thursday, 20 year 10 KP students will be visiting Korn Ferry to participate in an Interview to Impress session. Other programs include; Future Thinkers, Aspirations and Innovate programs. These programs are always well received by students and the feedback from the corporate mentors highlights how engaged our students are in the sessions.

Lastly, Friday’s cold and wet weather was not enough to dissuade students from putting on a great effort in the running of the campus Cross Country. Thanks to Ms Brookshaw and PE staff who organised the course and students on the day.

Thanks for your continued support,
