CHASE

Our College partnership with CHASE (Community Health Advancement and Student Engagement) continues this year with mentors attending the Year 11 VCAL PDS classes. Mentors, undergraduate students from the University of Melbourne, have been working with students and PDS teachers in an education and then onto the action phase. Students are required to research and plan a project in the area of community health. Not only does CHASE help educate students on key topics centred around health and wellbeing, but it also provides a special opportunity for the students to interact with university students on an individual basis, where students are able to speak one on one with further questions or seek clarification, which enables them to gain a deeper level of understanding of important health topics covered. These health topics include, mental health, nutrition, sexual health and physical activity. Last year, the CHASE showcase demonstrated a celebration of all students’ community projects with parents, staff and members of the community in attendance. We look forward to another fantastic showcase later on in the year.

Yr 12 VCAL ABCN Focus Leadership program

This year, a group of yr 12 VCAL female students will begin the ABCN Focus Leadership program working with and learning from experienced successful women in corporate Australia.  These sessions will explore current thinking about leadership and explore the skills that are needed to engage in a successful, meaningful career. Workshops will continue throughout the year.

Joan Kirner women’s and children’s Sunshine Hospital Opening

On Sunday 5 May was the opening of the new women’s and children’s hospital in Sunshine. This new facility will allow more women to give birth and families to access children’s services closer to home in Melbourne’s west.

Western health has been a strong supporter of the Copperfield VCAL program, with the partnership entering its ninth year. Yr 12 VCAL students have spent several months planning and organising a range of products and events from Sunshine Hospital, including, a trivia night to raise funds for new equipment for the hospital, outdoor seating for the Dialysis unit, therapy rugs for the Dementia ward, a community library build and a mural for external doors.

Thank you to those students who volunteered on the day of the opening, well done!

YR 12 VCAL Mini Future Pathways Presentation

On Monday 6th May, Yr 12 VCAL students presented their mini future career pathways presentations to a panel of teachers. In order to achieve their learning outcomes for Skills for Further Study and PDS, the students are required to develop a pathway plan, and consider alternative pathways for study and training and deliver a sustained oral presentation to appropriate audiences.  This presentation provided students with the opportunity to improve and build upon their oral presentation skills for the final pathways presentation in term 3. Students should be extremely proud of their achievements and focus on the feedback given to enhance their skills. All parents and guardians are invited to attend their final presentation in term 3. Well done to everyone in involved.
