Delahey Campus Principal Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Term 2.  The Department’s Attitude to School Survey for students will be administered in the next week or two. Staff do reflect on the responses and put things into place to improve things for students.  Two Delahey specific examples of that are the work we have put into transition from Year 10 over the last couple of years as well as our current wellbeing focus.

Transition to the Delahey Campus

Last week we hosted the first of several sessions to assist Year 9 students when considering their future pathways. The information was very general, outlining the different options of VCE and VCAL. According to our feedback the most successful part of the session was when our current Year 12 students spoke about their experiences.  I would like to thank Ibrahim Chokayk, Cigdem Ismael, Alannah Bussutil and Drew Mason for sharing their reflections about their senior years with the Year 9 students and their families.  They spoke with aplomb and great insight, providing very valuable advice.

We have also hosted a group of aspirational Year 10 students in our VCE Experience whereby they spend a whole day at the campus, attending a range of VCE classes.  Feedback from them is extremely positive although they found the Year 12 classes ‘complicated’.

Transition continues for Year 10 on the June 12 Careers Day when they will spend the day here finding out about subject options.

Wellbeing focus

Yoga sessions have resumed on a Wednesday lunchtime and we have started running our Balanced Student sessions about self-management, mindfulness and prioritising, for our Year 12 students in addition to the other programs we run for all students.

VCAL news

Lorenne Clarke, our VCAL Leader has finalised a film clip explaining how Copperfield College runs our VCAL course.  It is a credit to her and the college and will be available on our website soon.

Last week saw our Year 12 VCAL mini pathways presentations in which students discussed their career plans.  Teachers were generally impressed with students’ preparation and presentation skills even though it is early in the year.  We are looking forward to hearing their final ones in August.  All Year 12 VCAL students went to the Brimbank Careers Fair last week as well.

Year 11 VCAL have started working with their CHASE mentors and will visit a careers expo later in the year.

VCE news

All students undertaking a Unit 3 and 4 VCE subject will be provided with the opportunity to understand and practice the GAT over the coming weeks (May 15 and 22) prior to the actual GAT on June 12.  It is essential for students to do their best on the GAT for a range of reasons, including the opportunity to get an accurate derived score should it be required at end of year exam time.  Mid-year exams for Year 12s will be run on a condensed timetable on June 13 and 14.

Year 11 VCE students have less than three weeks before Unit 1 is complete and their mid-year exams start on May 31, running until June 7.  Please note some Year 11 exams will run on Wednesday June 6 even though it is a pupil free day for the rest of the college.

Student Reports

We are concerned that only one third of parents have accessed their child’s report on Compass.  Please contact the college if you are unsure how to find the reports or need some assistance with Compass.

Uniform

As the cold weather approaches students are wearing hoodies and long sleeved tops under their polo shirts.  This is not permitted; we have school jumpers, jackets and long sleeved polos available to ensure students are warm and any plain navy scarf may also be worn.  Please help your child comply with our uniform policy and approach us if you need some help with that.

That’s all for now,

Ms Pip Griffiths and Ms Amanda Mullins
