YEAR 7

Edendale Farm Excursion
Edendale Farm presented an intriguing and eye-opening day for both students and staff. We learnt practical ways to reduce our carbon emissions and to implement sustainable practices into our everyday lives. The day was spent with different Edendale staff members who each ran each group of the Year 7 students through an activity which engaged with a certain aspect of sustainability. I think the students were able to appreciate being outside of the classroom and having a more 'hands-on' experience. It was also good to see students representing our College in a thoughtful way, I was very proud of our students for respecting the staff members and attempting each activity with enthusiasm.

Cyber Safety
On Tuesday, 17 April, Year 7 students attended an incursion on cyber safety. Officer Sophie from the Victorian Police Force came down the school to inform us of the dangers that the internet, social media and online games can have! Many important issues were discussed such as how to handle being cyber bullied, standing up to cyber bullies and not being a bystander!
The hard truth of cyber bullying is that there are so many repercussions that this issue has on teenagers, adults and children. These cyber bullies manipulate children, hurt children, cause mental worry and pain and even make racist and inappropriate remarks about children and adults that affects all aspects of their lives! If children or adults are being cyber bullied to an extreme extent, the person affected may begin to experience depression, become very isolated and may even think about suicide! Last year, suicide was such an extreme issue that in every 100,000 people in Australia, 12.5% of these people thought about suiciding and even took their lives unfortunately! These facts, are extremely daunting and cyber bullying causes most of these suicide rates.
The Victorian Police and Government realised that bullying statistics were at an all-time high in 2011! The Police and Government knew that they had to lower the stats, so a law was introduced known as ‘Brodie’s Law’ in 2011! The law states that bullying is a crime punishable with up to 10 years in jail. The law is called Brodie’s Law because a young lady named Brodie Panlock took her own life in September of 2006 due to being relentlessly bullied in the workplace.
Bullying is horrible and due to this incursion, all of the students in Year 7 are now aware of the horrific consequences of bullying!
