VISUAL ART - Sandra Renehan (Art teacher)

Reconciliation Week in Visual Art:

Students enjoyed experimenting with new techniques including creating rubbings from native gum and eucalyptus trees, experimenting with overlapping through relief printing and focusing on continuous line drawing from a still life.

Others explored the meaning of some of the many symbols in Aboriginal artforms and experimented with creating their own family story using ink and sticks from the native Melaleuca tree.

MULTITASKING IS A MYTH!

On Wednesday the 15th of June, the Years 4, 5 and 6 students all participated in an incursion. It was a seminar about eSafety. Jeremy Kalbstien from The Empathy Initiative led it and talked to us about multitasking and how he believed not many people could do it!  Lots of us thought we were good at it.. Until…

We participated in activities that involved multitasking such as playing Rock, Paper, Scissors and Thumb-Wars on separate hands at the same time. One game on one hand and another on the other hand. It was very hard and frustrating, but we managed it and it was fun in the end with a few laughs!

Some games were very confusing like finding the toilet (like Where’s Wally) and it was also fun learning how sometimes we miss things when there are other things going on because we can’t give multiple things our full attention.  We watched some games where we had to find the chocolate under the cup and some of us missed when the cups changed colour or where there was an extra hand! We tried to listen to two conversations at the same time and we were quizzed on what we could remember. This was really interesting.

Jeremy talked to us about being online and about apps and social media, how to monitor how much screen time we have (and why we should) and why social media is not a great idea at our age.  We talked about ‘digital distraction’ and learnt some new words 'swambie and petextrian'! We watched a lot of people walk into things: poles, water fountains and stairs, because they were looking at their phones and unaware of their surroundings, because it is actually hard to truly multitask! That might give you a clue as to what those new words mean! It’s horrible to think that people have been hit by cars, because they couldn’t look up from their phones and how some countries are changing the way their roads and paths work, imagine having a ‘texting lane’ on a walkway here!

We did some activities aside from the Thumb-Wars, that involved us attempting to write with TWO hands at the same time and how quickly we could write numbers and letters, then timed again ‘switch tasking’.

A quote from the day about multitasking that many of us liked was ‘Multitasking - the act of messing up several things at once.’  This is because it is hard to give the proper amount of time and attention to multiple things at once.

Jeremy is also an author and wrote a book in which the lead character is cyberbullied and how someone else helped and stopped that from getting worse. It is important for us to remember we can always ask a trusted adult for advice about things that happen online and the esafety commission has a website with more resources.

SPORTS NEWS

On Thursday the 9th of June The Years 5 and 6 AFL team travelled by bus to the Percy Tryvaud Park in Malvern East to participate in the AFL Lightning Premiership. We played 8 games of football against 8 different schools. The weather was mostly kind. One of the ovals was quite muddy, which we have to say, some kids liked!! We’d like to apologise to anyone who did the washing that weekend!! Maybe we made up for the mess by being quiet that night, there were some tired kids on the bus ride home! It did rain lightly a couple of times, but wasn’t too bad.  We did see Team Manager Mr Scott and Coach Kat under an umbrella at one stage!

We were very lucky to have a friend of Mrs Ferrari’s son umpire for us. His name was Connor and he helped keep the game moving.  We’re pretty proud to say we improved as the games went on. We scored a few goals and took a few ‘specky’s’.

All of the games were played in great spirit.

The following Thursday saw us back on the bus (with the blue bear!) this time we were off to Hampton for the Netball Lightning Premiership. Both teams had developed their netball skills over the term and displayed some excellent passages of play. The A Team came up against some tough competition, but managed to score goals in each round and finished 6th on the ladder. The mixed team shot some very impressive long goals in each game and finished in an impressive third on their ladder!  Big thanks to Kimberley, Indie in Grade 5’s mum, for umpiring us and putting up with the cold. Again, we were pretty lucky with the weather.

The games were a lot of fun, some of them really close too. It was nice to be seeing some friends we’d made from other schools. We sat and cheered on the finalists.

Thanks so much to Mrs Mason for organising both of these sporting events. Managing the netball teams is a fair bit of work, as there were a few subs on the day so a ‘roster’ was required.

Another thing we’ve been doing behind the scenes is a ball audit around the school. We are doing this to make sure every class has balls and equipment to play with each play and lunch time.

Next Term we have our TRYAths Day, Hoop Time and the Holt District Athletics Carnival. We are VERY excited about all of these events. Don’t forget to come along to Thursday morning running club to keep up your fitness! Download the Stack Team App and join St Mary’s Running Club to register your attendance.

We hope everyone enjoys the holidays - see you next Term!
