From the History Department

Last Thursday the Stage 5 Mandatory History students participated in the Australian History Competition. This is a popular competition around the nation’s schools which has been running for over a decade now. St Pius has entered their History students in this regularly in that time. It consists of 50 multiple choice questions which rely on referring closely to the provided historical sources. A range of topics from modern Australian history are covered including our country’s experiences at war, indigenous issues and social history. We look forward to receiving the results next term when we will recognise the high achievers in this competition.

Duke of Ed Hike Adventurous Journey

After Term 1 cancellations due to COVID-19 and severe weather events, the first of our homegrown Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey’s went ahead last weekend. 20 Year 9 students completed their adventurous journey by hiking from Mt Ku-Ring-Gai to Cowan via Berowra and Brooklyn railway stations.

A day of water, mud, moss and the threat from leeches finished with an overnight camp at Brooklyn Dam. The following day, the boys continued their journey south to Cowan after taking in the breathtaking views of Brisbane Waters and Jerusalem Bay.

The boys were able to practice their bushcraft and navigation skills in addition to being involved in the many leadership opportunities that arose.

A very special thank you to Mr Reay and old boys Jack Schyvens and Will Oner for their time and assistance with this very worthwhile event.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award program is open to any student in Year 9 or above at the College. If your son is interested, then he can discuss how to join the program with Mrs Manga our Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator.
