NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week BBQ
Last Friday, Zelli Dursun (7), Jida Mccrae-Cooper (10), Kiya Charles (10), Mieshele Eriha (11), Xavier Challis (11) and Nicholas Challis (12) worked together to organise a whole school BBQ to acknowledge NAIDOC week.
NAIDOC week is an important time for Australians and particularly those from an Aboriginal and/or Torres Straight Islander background. It is a time to recognise and reflect on the ways that the British colonisation of Australia has brought about ongoing suffering of First Nations people and country. It is a time to enact justice and equity; to “Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!”
The school community had the opportunity to:
- Eat some kangaroo meat
- Play traditional Indigenous games
- Touch a Kangaroo skin and Marngrook (possum skin football!)
- Wear the colours of the Aboriginal Flag on their wrist to show support
- Hear some First Nations music
It was a great opportunity to start important conversations.
The Koorie students would like to thank everyone for their presence, curiosity and support.
