Being Well at Magill
NAIDOC Week
Dion Drummond Performance
Yesterday, our school was treated to a very special performance as part of NAIDOC week which celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Dion Drummond is one of Australia’s most experienced indigenous performers, covering both mainland and Torres Strait Islander culture, as a dancer singer and story teller.
Dion Drummond’s indigenous name is ‘Moogera,’ meaning Storm. He was born in Mossum (Kuku-Yalangi tribal area), north of Cairns. His mother is of Torres Strait Islander descent, his father Aboriginal.
Dion told stories, sang and danced; representing both sides of his culture. Children and teachers were invited to join in with both song and dance as well as learn a little language.
He was a highly engaging and interactive performer. Our students (not to mention teachers), loved the show. What a lovely way to end term two.
I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday.
