Year 8 Viking Voyagers Deep Learning Task

UNITE:  Our Year 8 students are rounding out this term by becoming Viking Clans as part of a FUSE Deep Learning Task. Students work collaboratively to apply the knowledge and understanding they have gained throughout the semester in Humanities, Maths, Science and English.

For this task, students have established themselves as Viking clans, creating unique clan names, assigning characters and social statuses to their group members, designing flags and practising their creative writing by imagining Viking Sagas to provide history and mythology for their Clan. Students are designing and building forts and longships using their learning in maths with ratios and geometry, as well as fashioning helmets, armour and weaponry out of recycled cardboard. They have drawn maps and applied their knowledge of Viking history and geography by staking their claim to land by planting their flag on the world map and defending their settlements from any other clan that tries to invade.

Their work will culminate in a Viking Voyagers Expo next week, where they will display their work to their peers and teachers, giving each other feedback and fighting for the prize of Best Viking Clan 2022!

It is so great to see students be so creative in working with their classmates and being able to demonstrate their understanding of key concepts we have explored in this first half of the year.

Year 9 Journalism

STRIVE: A couple of our Year 9 Journalism students wrote some awesome articles destined for real-life websites and newspapers.  Their task was to research an issue of their choice, target a particular audience who would be interested in it, research where they would get their news and create an article based on all this research.

Year 9 Outdoor Education

RESPECT: As part of the Year 9 Outdoor Education Program, students are undertaking a range of activities designed to challenge them within our local environment. Today, they are walking 10kms along the Surf Coast Walk from Bells Beach back to the College.

These activities provide for a range of experiences and skill levels and aim to develop the students’ team building, resilience, problem solving and communication skills.

Year 11 VCAL

STRIVE: We had some great feedback from one of our students Billy C who had a very positive time doing placement with our local police at Torquay Police Station.  We can see that Billy made the most of his time there and that the team at Torquay Police Station were very accommodating, encouraging and motivating.  Here's Billy's review:

I was supervised mainly by Leading Senior Constable, Cathryn Hastie

Everyone was super nice. I felt that everyone cared about how I was going.

Instructions were all given and explained super clearly.

What transferable skills do you think you gained from this placement?
I’ve gained quite a bit of confidence through this program that I believe will help me later down the line.

This placement helped me understand what Police Victoria does on a day to day basis and encourages me to try my absolute best to get into the Police force as soon as I can

How did you show initiative in this workplace?
I made sure that I always arrived early and prepared

What technology and/or tools did you use at work?
I got to learn about most of the systems and tools that they use regularly (like their lost property system)

Who did you meet at work that you could learn from?
I think that I could learn from anyone there but I think I learned the most from Cathryn Hastie who showed me how nearly everything worked.

What opportunities did you have to work in a team?
All of what I did there was with an officer so I tried to help all the time.

What were the most enjoyable aspects of your placement?
I think learning about all their tools and systems would have been the coolest part of the placement.

Was there anything you didn’t enjoy about your placement?
No, it has all been super enjoyable.

What activities did you undertake that you feel you did well?
I feel that I did well in the research task that they gave me that looked into the history and entry requirements of the Victoria Police.

How would you rate this opportunity on a scale of 1-10?
10 out of 10

What other workplace will you seek in the future to enhance the skills you have gained?
Well, I want to pursue a career in the police force and I think this course will help me along that road.

Does this occupation interest you?
Definitely!

Would you recommend this placement to others?
I would highly recommend this placement to anyone looking into a career in Police or anyone interested in how it all works

Further Comment:
This placement was a super cool opportunity where I was able to learn all about the Victoria Police. Everyone is super nice to talk to and they make you feel involved. It was really interesting and I would recommend this opportunity to anyone.
