PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

End of Term 2

Term 2 is nearly over and I am extremely pleased that the school has had an excellent start to the year. Whilst we have battled a lot of illness this term leading to periods of absence for some students, and staff, we have all been back at school and connected to each other for a full semester.

The students have been working productively and our young people’s attitudes to demonstrating our College values of Strive, Unite, Respect and Flourish have been increasingly clear as the year has progressed.

Students will be dismissed on Friday June 24th at 2pm.

Term 2 will resume on Monday July 11th at 8:50am.

Wearing the School Uniform

As the weather begins to get colder in Terms 2 and 3, it is important that parents/carers are reminded of the expectations in regard to the wearing of the school uniform, mainly the jumpers. The school jumper, and not the spray jacket, must be worn first and foremost. We do not accept the spray jacket being worn over the top of a non-school jumper.

The new College ‘hoodie’ seems to be a hit and it’s been wonderful to see so many students wearing this already this year. Surf Coast School Stuff has ordered some items that should arrive soon, but we remind parents that you can also source SCSC uniform items from the PSW uniform shop in Geelong also.

Student Misuse of the Toilets

Unfortunately, some students are continuing to misuse the toilets which is leading to other students not feeling comfortable to visit the toilet, or unable to get access due to ‘crowding’ in these areas. Management of this issue is proving challenging, due to the fact that we do need to maintain privacy for students when they are visiting the toilets and staff cannot stand inside a toilet, nor should they need to.

The following information was communicated to families, and students, via Compass. Students have also been advised in assemblies.

Currently, students in Year 8 and 9 will use the toilets in the Middle Years Building, students in Years 10 through to 12 will be using the facilities in the locker bay between the Humanities and Science buildings and the Year 7s only will be using the toilets in the Year 7 locker bay. This will allow closer observation of the condition of the toilets throughout the day and ensure that students are able to access the toilets as they need to, without large groups of students in there.

All facilities, aside from the Year 8 and 9 toilets will be open during break times, and students are reminded that they should not be congregating in the toilets at break times. Staff that are on duty in these areas are monitoring this also.

It is important to remember that all students are expected to demonstrate respect for the College environment at all times, including the toilets. Any misuse or damage is not only disappointing and not reflective of our College values, but will result in consequences for those responsible.

Unless there are improvements in the way that students are able to regulate their behaviour in the toilets, there will be further changes implemented in Term 3.

Pathways Expo Evening – July 14th

This year, SCSC is going to be undertaking a new format for information evenings to assist our students with making subject choices for 2023, and also to help them be informed about their pathways choices into the future.

The College will be holding its first Pathways Expo on July 14th from 6pm to 8pm in the Wurdi Baierr Stadium.

The evening will involve information presentations for year levels happening at set times (two options for each year level) on one side of the stadium, and then a subject expo on the other side that students can peruse with their parents/carers to learn more about their subject choices, speak to teaching staff and also hear from those present from Deakin, The Gordon TAFE and the Headstart initiative.

The information sessions will be held at the following times:

6:00pm - 6:15pmYear 8 into 9
6:20pm - 6:35pmYear 9 into 10
6:40pm - 6:55pm Year 10 into 11
7pm - 7:15pmYear 8 into 9
7:20pm - 7:35pmYear 9 into 10
7:40pm - 7:55pmYear 10 into 11

More detailed information will be sent to families soon, along with the subject handbook to assist students and families to understand their options.

We look forward to welcoming our families to this event in the first week of next term.

Enjoy your break and stay safe.
