Primary School News

Primary Education Assistants getting into the Colour Fest spirit, June 2022.

From the Head of Primary, Tracey Rogers

It was so wonderful to see the Primary come alive in Week 7 with the Colour Fest activities and dress up day on Friday 10 June. There was great joy and a sense of fun around Primary as children dressed in their favourite colours. Our thanks to the Class Representatives and Mrs Godfrey for their leadership of this initiative. After postponing the Inter-House Cross-Country due to inclement weather, we were so fortunate to have beautiful blue skies for our Carnival on the 24th June. It was great to see all competitors and spectators out in their House colours on showing that excellent JWACS House Spirit! As always, there is a lot to be grateful for as we reflect on the last few weeks of Term 2 and all the happenings around the Primary school.

Playground Redevelopment

I am excited to share that we have approved concept plans for our Primary Playground redevelopment project. It has taken some time to ensure not just that our Playground reflects the key design elements (taken from student surveys), is completed by a reputable contractor and meets the budget! Always many things to consider and get right. Installation is currently planned to commence in Term 4.

Captains – Stepping up!

I would like to take the opportunity to thank and congratulate our team of Primary Captains. They have shown themselves to be a reliable, enthusiastic team who are willing to do what it takes to get the job done. Their ability to be organised and step in for each other has ensured our online Assemblies each Friday run smoothly. This is just one small example, but we are very proud of the guide they are setting as a leadership team in Primary this year.

Conferences and Reporting

I have sent communication to families regarding Conferences and Reporting for Semester 1. This is an important read as it shares some of the context for our Semester 1 Reports. It is important to me that students, staff and families are ‘on the same page’ in regards to reporting this semester. Please use the link below to access the letter again if required. Thank you to those families who have already used the survey to provide feedback on the use of Edval for booking Conferences.

Yipirinya School

In partnership with Peter Moyes, we have been collecting second-hand winter clothing, shoes or footy boots for the students at Yipirinya School in Alice Springs. Our JWACS community has been very generous with donations, with the collection far exceeding expectations! Our thanks to Ms Melanie Fowler for her work in this collaboration to support Yipirinya School.

Colour Fest- Student Highlights

Charlotte Mowling, Year 3 Bilby

On Tuesday 7 June, we did fan activities in the Library. We did Lego, origami, bubble tea colouring and a game called Ball Sort. Ball Sort. Charter House achieved first place, Ramsden second Hale third and Scott fourth. For the bubble tea activity, we coloured in drawings of bubble tea then scrunched up little ball of paper for the ‘bubbles’.  On Friday 10 June it was the Colour Fest. I dressed up in yellow because my Nanny likes yellow. I dressed up in a yellow dress, yellow pants and a yellow top that was long sleeved. We made a gold coin donation for indoor play equipment for the Upper Primary School.

Skylar Thompson, Year 3 Bilby

During Colour Fest Week in the Library there were a lot of fun activities. There was Lego, origami, colouring and Ball Sort. I ran the origami activity and we made flowers, butterflies, bats and dogs. On the Friday it was dress up day and I came dressed as the colour blue. I had a blue big sleeve shirt, blue jeans and blue sneakers. We made a coin donation for indoor play equipment to use on rainy days.

Ranvir Gill, Year 3 Kookaburra

In the Library there were loads of activities. There was Lego and we had a challenge to make it colourful. There was one person who made a quad bike, two people made a house and somebody made a car. On Friday we got to dress up in our favourite colour and I wore red. We raised money for Upper Primary play equipment. I wore a red shirt, red pants, red hoodie and red shoes. Red has been drawn to my attention ever since I dressed up that day.

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Open Morning

On Wednesday 15 June we had our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Open Morning. Prospective students and their families enjoyed a taste of the Early Learning Centre and classroom environment with crafts, rhyme time and play-based activities. Early Years Coordinator, Mel Cuming spoke to parents about the Early Years Program whilst children enjoyed fruit time on the mat.

Inter-House Cross Country

Primary students put in a fantastic effort for their Inter-House Cross Country Carnival on Friday. Congratulations to everyone who participated, cheered for their peers and demonstrated confident House Spirit.

 Have Sum Fun Mathematics Competition

Have Sum Fun is conducted by the Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA) and is endorsed by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT). It is a Maths quiz of problems for both students at home and school year-level teams of four students. HSFOL is designed to foster mathematical problem solving for students in Years 3-10 across Australia. Congratulations to the students who participated in Semester 1. Our school performed well with our highest team positions being:

  • 23rd out of 50 schools for Year 5
  • 27th out of 56 schools for Year 6
