On Friday 27 May, we had our first K-6 assembly since COVID arrived. During this time, many students received a merit certificate for their hard work and dedication to their learning. This was a lovely opportunity for families to come and see students be acknowledged for their continuous efforts in class.
We are grateful that we can now host these assemblies again and look forward to seeing more families enjoy these moments with us.
On Thursday 2 June, Amelia B of Year 11, competed at the CSSA State Gymnastics at Sydney Gymnastics Centre. Competing in National Level 8, she achieved 1st in Vault, 2nd in Beam and Floor and 3rd in Bars. Impressively, Amelia also placed 2nd overall. Amelia trains 17.5 hours per week in Shellharbour to compete at this level. Well done Amelia, we are so proud of you!
State Cross Country this year, held at the International Equestrian Centre in Sydney, was a day of two halves: one wet and one dry! Looking at the stunning day as seen in the photographs belies the muddy conditions on the track itself. Yet, despite some competitors getting up close and personal with the mud, an enjoyable day was had by all.
Our combined primary and secondary teams numbered 39 runners and with around 100-180 runners in most age categories, the event was challenging.
Unfortunately, Evie L, Joel H & Bethany D had to pull out due to illness.
All our students competed admirably and were very supportive of their fellow NCS and South Coast Zone teammates. A number of competitors made it to CIS State including:
Other notable results in the top 50 included
Congratulations to all students, whether this is your first time competing or you are a veteran at this level. The event was enjoyed by all students and was a great opportunity for everyone to showcase their talents and passions. Thank you to all the teachers and staff who assisted on the day.
Last Friday 3 June, NCS took four secondary teams to the CSSA Secondary South Coast Zone Soccer Gala Day held at Ison Park.
We looked amazing in our new sports jerseys and were excited to move around in our first game of the cold morning. We played against ICS, Southern Highlands, Calderwood and Cedars.
We were all happy to see Mrs Meek again, who was attending with her new school. Our teams all played to the best of our abilities in all of our games and we held our ground as NCS pretty well! Special mention goes to Jalesa (Jnr Girls) & Bijin (Opens Boys) who received last minute call-ups to play. All of the teams achieved third place, apart from the Junior girls. They were undefeated in all of their earlier games and finished the day in second place!
'It was a great experience, playing with friends and getting to know new ones' Darien, Year 11
We’re all happy that we got to play and are really grateful for the parents and incredible staff and teachers who helped out ,not only on the day as coaches, drivers and supporters, but also with their help training and preparing us for the Gala Day!
Last Monday was the CSSA Primary Metro Cup of Football for our South Coast Zone. It was held at Kembla Grange on Astroturf pitches, so the recent rain didn't affect us!
It was probably the windiest day to play football that I've ever encountered in my time on planet Earth! It's no exaggeration to say that conditions nearly blew spectators and players off the pitches, never mind the footballs! With that in mind, it wasn't any great surprise that the teams who played by moving the football between their players with short intricate passes prospered and those who played a more physical, running type of game found the going tough.
NCS sent a Stage 2 and Stage 3 team. Our Stage 3 team began the day with a goal in their first match, as Elsie P scored from open play. Unfortunately, the opposition got a couple in reply and we lost by the odd goal. This was followed by three even tougher matches against teams who played that intricate passing style, so we found the going quite hard.
Heads didn't drop and all the players kept trying their hardest until the very last kick of the final game.
Whilst we didn't win any matches, the supporters and officials were won over by our NCS's fair play and team spirit!
Our Stage 2 team was coached by the mercurial Mr Tasker. They began with a 4-1 victory that set the scene for their other three matches. These they also won by scoring at will and by defending stoutly. 12 points and a goal difference of +19 were more than enough to ensure top place and winning the perpetual trophy.
Toby G scored 8 goals, to finish the day with 'The Golden Boot'! Flynn S made some outstanding saves to ensure only 2 goals were conceded throughout the day. Special mentions must go to Addison G and Leo P, playing as Year 3's in a predominantly Year 4 team. The triumphant Stage 2's and their coach were presented with commemorative medals to mark their tournament victory. They now progress to the NSW State Metro Cup finals in Western Sydney next term.
Well done, everyone in both teams. We are very proud of you. Thanks to Millie W (Y9) and her dad John, who were officials on the day during many matches. Thanks also to our enthusiastic parent/carer cheer squads, who braved the elements for the love of their offspring and 'the beautiful game'. Much appreciated!
On Wednesday 8 June, Elsie P, Emily McL, Hamish McL, Joel H, Zechariah B and Kent E competed at the NSWCIS Primary and Secondary Cross Country Championships at the Sydney Motorsport Park.
Emily and Zechariah were asked to share about their experiences at NSWCIS:
'I was so excited to race. This was my first time at NSWCIS' - Zechariah
'This was my fifth time at CIS. Getting a PB was my highlight. I can't wait for next year!'- Emily
Elsie P was our only primary representative for CIS this year. In spite of a knee injury, she summoned great endurance and speed to finish in 31st position out of a field of over 100 girls in her race. In doing so, she set a new 45 second personal best time for this distance, a rare achievement in middle distance running at this elite level. We are so proud of your achievements in cross country competition this year, Elsie. Well done!
A huge congratulations to Joel who placed in the top 10 at this event. Joel has qualified to compete at the All Schools event which will be held during the upcoming school holidays.
