Time is flying!

It has been a very busy and buzy couple of weeks in Performing Arts.

Foundation

The students worked in small groups to learn, recite and then perform the nursery rhyme, 'Little Miss Muffet'. They were given creative freedom to include different characters in their performance, such as the cook who prepared the 'curds and whey' and the gardener who mowed the grass around the tuffet. We played the mime game, 'Pass it to me' and the fast thinking game, 'Do This, Do That'. We listened to the storybook of 'The Wizard of Oz' and are beginning to learn about all of the different characters and the way they communicate with each other. We will role play this over the next couple of weeks.

Level 1 and 2

The students listened to a reading of 'The Wizard of Oz' and, with assistance, turned the various storybook chapters into dramatic scenes to be re-enacted. They consolidated their understanding of drama being a form of storytelling and worked collaboratively to cast all of the different characters in all nine scenes. I have been so proud of their flexibility and team work. We are now beginning to rehearse and perform each scene which has developed the students' knowledge of stage directions and characterisation.

Level 3 and 4

The students used their creative imaginations during our 'Newspaper Improvisation' activity. They created an object out of a newspaper and acted with it until we could guess the object. I think our most cryptic (and creative) object would have to have been a Tsunami. We are now working on some small group scripted dramas about a 'Superhero'. The students are planning all the characters, the plot and the grand resolution. I am looking forward to seeing these being performed and directed.

Level 5 and 6

The Level 6 students have been very busy working together to prepare a revised version of 'The Wizard of Oz'. I have been so proud of their ability to not only take on new parts, but some students have even had the dedication and creativity to write new scenes for our show. Such talent! We have brushed up on the choreography for the Year 6 dance, 'All in this Together' and have had some costumes fitted. Please note the date for filming the revised show is Monday 6th December. More information will follow. The level 5 students have been busy inventing their own make believe career and preparing for their interview on the show 'This is Your Life'. This challenged their fast thinking, improvisation skills and their ability to stay in character (without laughing). The students will start to write, rehearse and perform their own small group drama which will be directed by fellow students.
