What's been Happening?

Year 6 Graduation

On Friday 3rd December, our Year 6 students celebrated the ending of their Primary school journey with dinner and a ceremony held at the Complex. Thank you to Amber, Yolande and Brooke for assisting with the set up and decorations in the afternoon, to the P&C volunteers for providing dinner and to Katie Rice for making four exquisite cakes. Well done to the Year 5 parents and students for helping with set up, serving of food and clean up. The audience was captivated by two wonderful photo slideshows made by Brooke and had the opportunity for some great photos with a photo wall and photo booth set up by Yolande. It was a great way to congratulate 7 wonderful Year 6 students. Thank you to everyone for making it special.

Year 12 Graduation

The Year 12 Graduation was celebrated in style at Merredin Chinese on Friday evening in Week 8. A group of 20 people gathered to celebrate our graduating student for 2021, Conrad Roberts. We also invited Kristy Shadbolt and her family and friends as Kristy completed some of her Year 12 studies in the SIDE Room this year. We were treated to a 2-course banquet followed by speeches and a delicious graduation cake. Thank you to Emma Shadbolt for making the cake and being our photographer for the evening. Congratulations Conrad on your academic successes in the SIDE room and all the best for your post-school life!

Messy Play - K/PP & Yr 5/6

On Friday 10th December, the Year 5/6 and K/PP students celebrated their last buddy time together with some messy play fun. Students enjoyed running through a sprinkler hose, sitting in a slime bath and squelching chia-slime, obleck and fake snow through their fingers. There was coloured ice and spaghetti as well as a sticky syrup and sprinkle mixture. Fun was had by all and finished off with a delicious ice-pole. Thank you to Mrs Lamond and Miss Bolt for their enthusiasm and organisation with this fun event!

Pre-Primary Farewell Lunch

The Pre-Primary parents were invited into the classroom on Monday for a farewell lunch with their children.  The parents were entertained with a slide show of the children from the various events throughout the year, made beaded necklaces, measured their childrens height, assisted the children in writing their favourite memory and what they are looking forward to in 2022 and painted their hand as a memory of how much they have grown.  The parents and children then opened Christmas crackers and enjoyed a delicious selection of food.  The food was all recipes which the Pre-Primary students have cooked and enjoyed throughout 2021.  Thank you to Mrs Lamond and Mrs Melville for all of the time, effort and enthusiasm put into this event all all events during 2021. The children and parents are very grateful.  Onwards and upwards for the PP students!

Brilliant Brains

We would like to say a massive THANK YOU to Kerryn Seaby for running the Brilliant Brains program in Semester 2, 2021.  Kerryn has done a fabulous job of educating and preparing the children to begin Kindy in 2022.  We will miss Kerryn's enthusiasm and smiling face at MDHS in 2022, we wish you lots of happiness in your move to the coast!

We finished the year with activities based on a Christmas theme. After locating their names on our magnetic board the children then had to find their initial letter in a Christmas tree. They’ve been practicing tracing their names and they’re getting really good at it. There was then a variety of activities to participate in:

Patterning on a bauble, rolling play dough and using cookie cutters to make Christmas shapes, threading Christmas beads on a pipe cleaner and making a reindeer face with foot and handprints. We also got messy and made snow in a tub - some of the children even made a snowman!! After jingling bells along to the book, “Aussie Jingle Bells” the students hunted in the library for stars and Christmas trees with numbers on them. They then put the correct number of Christmas stickers on each shape. We also made reindeer biscuits to have for morning tea. They were delicious, as was the food supplied by our Mums. After some outdoor play and Christmas action cards we returned to the library. Each student received a certificate and a book to recognise their participation in our Brilliant Brains program. Thank you to their Mums for my lovely flowers. Thank you also to Allison Nixon for ALL her help. I have really enjoyed running this year’s BB program. It was great to have children attending from other towns and getting to know them. I hope you all have a wonderful year at Kindy next year. Have a very happy Christmas. Kerryn Seaby

Whole School Orientation

On Wednesday all of our Primary students got the chance to experience some time in their future class for 2022. The students were able to move 'up' a grade into the next class for a period and the Year 6's got to spend the whole day in the Lower Secondary.  This was thoroughly enjoyed by all of the students, with some even asking if they could return the next day for more of a taste! The new Kindy students for 2022 also came in for a few hours in the K/PP and were not keen to leave which is a good sign!

The Year 6 students were able to use the Van Der Graaf Generator to show the effects of electricity and learn about observations and recording using basic scientific methods.

Secondary Electives

The Secondary students have had a productive final week with their elective classes. They raced the CO2 cars they made and also finished off their foam helmets which look super impressive!  Thanks to Mr Goulter and Mr Roberts for their sharing their knowledge and expertise throughout this year.
