Active Learning Day / Semester’s Eve / Exam Feedback Day
Tuesday, 16 November 2021 saw our students participate in different sessions to promote their learning. Our Year 7’s, 8’s and 10’s were taken through a range of physical, creative and curiosity driven activities across different areas of the curriculum. See the photos below of some of these activities.
Our Year 9’s were engaged in information sessions about their careers - it is never too early for them to start thinking about their future goals. They were also preparing for Work Experience which will occur in June, 2022. Our Year 11’s attended exam feedback sessions with their teachers - with the aim to learn from their efforts in their first year of VCE and set their sights on success in their final year of schooling. Which brings us to the Head Start program.
Head Start Program
While the classes may change and the timetable moves around, our students are always on a learning journey that at its core should continue seamlessly through their years at school. The Head Start program is a key component of this process. It’s not only a chance for students to begin learning about the subjects they will have in the new year - but an opportunity for teachers to learn about their students and consider how to weave their learning from the previous year into the new one.
A New Year - A new chance to talk to our young people about their phones
As I’ve begun my new classes this week I’ve been speaking to my students about how we as humans learn best. Recent research has shown that only about 3% of the population can efficiently multitask, with the rest of us just trying but not succeeding. But we don’t need research to tell us that young people don’t study or do their homework the best with their phones nearby. Concentration isn’t the only issue with phones nearby - with the below infographic showing 5 other reasons to ditch the device while trying to work.
So I’ve implored my students to put the phones in another room when doing study or homework. But if that is impossible - some of my Year 12’s have advised me that the free app Forest allows you to grow trees if you don’t touch your phone. Whichever method - it’s worth a shot.
