Ms. Christine Barnes - Head of Health, Wellness and Sport

AFL

The introductory AFL sessions have been a great experience for all girls attending, some very excited and picking up the sport very quickly. Mr. Matt Hesse has been the Clayfield AFL Queensland coach assigned to Clayfield for most of our sessions, and he is very keen to come on board and coach our first Senior AFL team in 2022. Teams next year will consist of 15 players, 12 on the field at any one time.

Now we just need the players! Any girls in Years 10 to 12 in 2022 are encouraged to signup on the Croc Board by Friday 26 November as we need to nominate teams this year. Please come and see Ms. Barnes for more information if you are interested.

QG Senior Softball

Pre-season Training has commenced, and although numbers are quite strong, we are still looking for a few more girls to field two very strong teams. So any girls who want to be involved in Senior Softball need to put their name up on the list on the Croc Board and attend the two training sessions each week.

Nominations for teams are due to QG on Friday 19 November. Please see the College App for full training details.

QG Cricket

The College has secured a second coach who will take on the Opens / Senior A cricket team this year. All team nominations are due to QG by Friday 19 November. Any girls interested in playing cricket need to sign-up on the Croc Board and attend the two training sessions each week. All girls are welcome to come along and try this sport if they have never played before. Please keep up to date with training and any changes via the College App.

A reminder also that the annual parent’s/family member vs. student game/masterclass and BBQ will run again this year.

The details of this event are as follows:

Date:    Saturday 27 November
Time:   7:00 am – 11:00 am
Venue: Clayfield College Oval

The girls need no previous experience to join cricket or family members to be involved in this game, just a willingness to learn and participate.

QG Swimming

Girls from Year 6 to 11 are invited to attend training scheduled from 6:30 am – 7:45 am from Monday to Thursday. Full details of training and preliminary information about next year’s swim camp can be found on the College App.

CC Running Club

The new CC Running Club will offer only ONE running session each week, Friday morning, 6:45 am – 7:45 am at Kalinga Park. Girls MUST sign-up for the Friday session on the Croc Board by 1:30 pm each Thursday to ensure we have the transport required to bring all girls back at the end of training. Students must be dropped at Kalinga Park by private transport. Full details of the training times and days can be found on the weekly training schedule posted on the College App and Croc Board.

2021 Sports Awards Dinner

This week more than 190 people attended the annual Sports Awards Dinner at Ruggers, Albion. It was a wonderful night that acknowledged the achievements, efforts, and dedication of so many of our girls to the Clayfield sporting program and those who have gone on to represent their region, state, or nation. Congratulations to the many girls who received rewards in recognition of your accomplishments, commitment, dedication, and representation of Clayfield College. You all certainly let your green, gold, and blue shine bright.

The highlight of the evening for all was guest speaker Mariafe Artacho del Solar, Australian Beach Volleyballer who has just won silver at the recent Tokyo Olympics. Mariafe warmed very quickly with all girls through her engaging demeanour, radiant smile, and willingness to share around her silver medal for all to wear and get a photo with it around their necks. The Q & A session lead by Rhiannon and Grace gave all in attendance an incredible insight into Mariafe's life and journey from an inspired seven year old to the world champion she is today.  Below are a few of the more notable achievements highlighted on the night.

Congratulations to the outgoing Sports Captains, Rhiannon Hastie and Grace O'Brien, for all the work, effort, and planning they put into hosting the night. The overwhelming feedback was very positive and is a credit to your efforts. Thank you to all the College Sport Executive members for 2021. Your contributions to the night were an absolute highlight to watch as we ate dinner.

As we now look forward and begin planning for 2022, the priority will be to secure a venue that allows all girls involved in QG Sport and their families the opportunity to attend. The night is a grand celebration of all who play in QG teams, and therefore all will be given the opportunity next year to attend.

Sports Camps in 2022

The dates for the Summer Sports Camp are Monday 17 to Wednesday 19 January, the week before school commences. All girls who have signed up for any Semester 1 in-season sports are invited to attend the camp. The cost for the camp will range from $240 - $280 per student, all-inclusive depending on the numbers who attend. The minimum number will be 30 girls.

Please see the draft itinerary below to give girls an idea of what the camp will look like. The camps will focus on skill and game development, body maintenance principles, and team cohesion and connection. We hope these camps are well received as they are a key element in strengthening the success, unity, and team sprint Clayfield teams are renowned for. Full details will be released in Week 8 of this term.

Volleyball Academy

Whole Year Program

The Clayfield Volleyball Academy continues every Monday from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm in the PE Centre. Please see Ms. Barnes if you are keen to join in 2022 and to collect the paperwork. Any girls who choose to leave the program MUST send an email to confirm this, or payments will still be added to your College fees.

It is wonderful to share student achievements with you each week.  If your child has achieved a significant result you would like to share, please email Ms. Christine Barnes. Please label your email “Student Achievements.”  We love sharing and celebrating student sporting achievements with our wider community.
