Library Corner

Best wishes to everyone for a relaxing summer break. Despite the challenges of 2021, the library has continued to thrive. Top loans in 2021 for print books include the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan and the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan. In our digital book collection ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell, ‘Catching Fire’ by Suzanne Collins, and ‘Trash’ by Andy Mulligan were the top loaned items.

It was wonderful to welcome our Year 7 of 2022 to the school and the library. For those Year 7s our Library Catalogue is available to browse at home over the summer break. Login details will be available for our 2022 Year 7s at the beginning of Term 1.

Summer Reading and Activities

Students were encouraged to borrow books from the library in their transition library English lesson for the summer break for those returning to GEC in 2022. The holidays are a great time to explore our online resources including:

If you are looking for gift ideas for your children or book recommendations, The Bookshelf (on ABC Radio National) ran a special on Middle Grade and Young Adult Reading Recommendations. Listen here.

Big Summer Read

Research has identified a phenomenon known as the ‘summer slide’, which refers to the loss of literacy skills over the summer holidays when children do not read—estimated on average as the equivalent of two to three months of reading proficiency. Loss of reading proficiency is most acute in children from economically disadvantaged communities. Big Summer Read is taking place at Glen Eira Libraries this summer between 1 December 2021 – 31 January 2022. Registration is now OPEN! The Big Summer Reads aims to arrest the ‘summer’ slide by engaging children and their families in a fun and interactive campaign through public libraries. More information can be found here.
