The Chaplain’s Corner

Reflection 19 November: Friday, Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time.

The First Book of Maccabees recounts the rededication of the Temple after Judas Maccabeus recaptured it from the king who had desecrated it. The celebration of the rededication went on for eight days during which the oil lamps continued to burn miraculously. This is the historic origin of the feast of Hanukah, the Feast of Lights. It is a celebration of reconsecration.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is cleansing the Temple. It had become highly commercialised with people exchanging various foreign currencies for the temple shekel, all for a fee. It is like Bingo of years ago dominating parish life.

Jesus also says that the temple was turned into a den of thieves. The people of His time had used the temple, the sacred symbol of all Judaism was called to be, as a den or hideout from God’s wrath.

God sees not only how we pray but how we live. It is possible for a person to say many prayers but live a life of disobedience. The worst case occurs when someone doesn’t even realise it. There develops a huge gulf between one’s devotional life and daily life. Even though people may disconnect the two, God doesn’t.

Every year, Advent can be a time for our reconsecration, for our cleansing the Temple of our spiritual life and daily life. We all need a periodic cleansing. The greatest church, left untended, will have cobwebs, dusty pews, roof leaks, broken windows, dirty walls, cracked tiles, worn rugs and warped doors. If these things can happen to a building, consider what can happen to our soul, our spiritual life, if left untended.

A church needs constant maintenance to prevent deterioration. Our prayer life needs constant maintenance as well. Advent is a good time to develop a plan for cleansing, reconsecration and rededication.

Mary, our Good Mother, pray for us.
St. Marcellin Champagnat, pray for us.
St. Mary of the Cross, pray for us.
And may we always remember to pray for one another.
