Sport News

Mr Luke Caplick

As the Christmas holiday period is just around the corner, it would not be unreasonable to assume that the sports program at Marist College Ashgrove would be on ‘shutdown’ mode. Not So! Please refer to the College App for all information pertaining to trials and training.

Our success in sport this year has been very pleasing. Success in sport comes through hard work and dedication from many people. The hard work and dedication needed to do well is often unseen and is generated by the efforts of many people spanning the entire season. This includes involvement in the lengthy pre-season programs. Currently, we have many students involved in cricket, volleyball, swimming, AFL and rugby pre-season programs. I acknowledge the efforts these students and their coaches give towards these programs and I congratulate them all for their ongoing commitment and dedication.

Unfortunately, hard work and dedication will not always guarantee premierships or first places. This is an unpleasant fact that we just have to accept. However, in my mind, there is no doubt that hard work and dedication is instrumental in building a positive school culture and building character among our students. Sport at Marist is about getting involved, giving your best, pride in the jersey, enhancing school spirit and enjoying the challenges you face with your teammates.

I suppose the bigger picture here is not about winning or premierships, although we work for them. It’s about giving it your best shot and accepting that things don’t come easy and at times you have to grit your teeth and get ‘stuck in’ in order reap the rewards. There are many life lessons to be learnt whilst participating in sport. We acknowledge and thank the entire community for the efforts given this year and look forward to 2022.

Individual Achievements

After a successful regional selection triathlon race at Kawana Waters recently, Jake Davidson (9R) and Lachlan Davidson (8R) have both qualified for the upcoming state selection Triathlon in Hervey Bay next year. Jake will compete in the intermediate category and Lachlan in the Junior category. We wish both boys the best of luck when they compete at the State Championships in 2022 and congratulate them on their selection in the Met North Triathlon team.

The courts will be locked over the Christmas period, but all financial members will be able to use the courts during daylight hours for free. We are currently setting up a booking system for members to enjoy and continue to use the courts and be part of these fantastic facilities whilst we continue to grow.  Nighttime bookings will be $10.00 per hour for use of lights.

We are also taking bookings for Term 1, 2022 where we will look to finalise training days once all Term 1 sports have locked in their training schedules. Thank you to all who have contacted us already and showed their interest in our Squad and Group lessons for next year.

We have many students who are showing great improvement and I would love to finish by thanking all of our Members who have supported the tennis club and coaching pathways this term. We are so happy as coaches to get to share the journey as our students improve and become better players.
