Year 7 and 8 Pop Art Paintings

Year 7 and 8 Visual Arts students have been researching POP ART and working on their own paintings this term. The students' paintings are vibrant and exciting, and based on the artworks of artists Andy Warhol and Roy Liechtenstein. Students have used ‘benday dots’ and complementary colour schemes in their works. The look wonderful! Well done.

Lights, Camera, Pius! Film Festival

Lights Camera Pius! was launched on Monday. The pandemic caused some delays but nothing can stop the Film Festival – the show must go on!  The Festival is now a tradition, it has been running for 6 years.

What has been amazing is that so many of this year’s films have been made during lockdown, when it was really difficult to meet up with friends to film. So many of the boys were creative in getting around that, using family, working on their own or waiting until some of the restrictions lifted.

As usual we have a real assortment of films – each year they keep getting better.

Our judges met today to decide the winners. Watch your mates and support a fantastic cultural event. Next Monday during Assembly the winners will be announced.

Science Club

For our second last Science Club of the year, we decided to explore the geometry of bubbles. The boys made cube shapes out of pipe cleaners and then placed them in a specially made strong bubble mixture.  We then investigated the different shaped bubbles that formed. The main goal was to form a bubble inside a bubble... which we were able to do. We then did a new and improved sugar carbon stack in the fume cupboard.

All Science Club members are reminded that the last Science Club will run next Thursday 2 December and we would love all students to attend.

Reading Rewards; Rice wins the 2021 ERRC

Year 10’s champion readers were rewarded at today’s Year Assembly. College Leaders Will Staber, Ben Cullen and Ronan Crispe congratulated our five top readers with the COVID handshake (elbow bump) and a Book Voucher. It seemed fitting on a day where the assembly’s focus was Year 11 leadership that students' reading efforts were acknowledged as there is a strong correlation between reading, achievement and leadership.

Our leaders also accepted the House Points from this year’s Edmund Rice Readers’ Cup. Rice House’s win is in part due to Lucas Wong’s prodigious reading. Lucas borrows, on average, 600 books every year. Our five champion readers (pictured) as well as readers who read books totalling 90 points or more (pictured) will be treated tomorrow to a lunch at the Westfield Food Court.

Maths Drop-In

Students are welcome to attend Maths Drop-In mornings for assistance with all their maths questions and issues.

Junior Students:  Friday from 7.40 am in the Diverse Learning Room of the Junior School (across the hall from Mrs Fileman's classroom)

Senior Students:  Tuesday & Thursday from 7.40 am in C1

This is the ideal place where students can come and feel comfortable to ask questions and nut out some challenging problems. Rewards are given, laughter is heard and words of encouragement are shared. Come along and be a part of the team.

Mrs Amanda Fileman - Classroom Teacher
