Prep / One / Two

BER news!

Welcome back to school - Term 3 is going to be a busy term at Loch PS and in the Prep/One/Two area!

Our Writing focus is on Information Reports. We have already completed a couple of writing sessions about some crazy hybrid animals, describing their looks, diet and habitat. We have looked at these weird and wonderful animals…

Prep/One

We are now working through the MSL (Multi-sensory Structured Learning) lessons in our literacy sessions. This involves lots of hearing, reading and writing of sounds, syllables, words and sentences. We are looking at how syllables work, some spelling rules, and some new spelling choices called ‘diagraphs’ and ‘trigraphs’ (such as sh, ph, ea, ck, ch, tch) and when to use them.

In Maths, we have begun a unit on Fractions. We have started by focussing on half of an item or group and will move towards looking at quarters and eighths when each child is ready.  The children have loved working in the Pizza Parlour in the investigations area, practising cutting up playdough pizza’s for the customers in the fraction specified and then paying the required amount. A whole pizza is $10, half a pizza is $5 etc. 100 days of school celebrations on Thursday – a busy day with lots of work around 100 – incorporating numeracy with literacy, cooking and arts and crafts.

Our Integrated Unit of study for this term is personal safety. We have begun with learning where we live in the world, being able to say our address and phone number. This term will comprise of visits to the fire station (details to follow with times – parents welcome), learning first aid with the St John’s Ambulance educators and, how to dial 000 in an emergency. We will also look at protective behaviours and respectful relationships.

In Digital Technology, we will be looking at how to type writing into a Word Document and how to insert a picture.

It’s going to be a busy term! Don’t forget to check the school calendar for up and coming events.

Year One/ Two

During spelling lessons we have been learning about short and long vowels which has helped up with our learning about the floss rule. 'We often double l,f or s following a single vowel at the end of a word of one syllable as in will, off, and roll.' While reading we are practicing reading nonsense words to test what we have been learning about open and closed syllables. During Maths lessons we have been learning about fractions. The kids have made pizza fractions and flower fractions and have enjoyed looking at what fractions are in our lunch each day. During our health learning we have been looking at different ways to resolve conflict and what emotions we have and what can make us feel each emotion. We had a lot of fun celebrating being at school 100 days! A highlight was the 100 year old photos of the kids and the great writing that they did to describe what they would be like in 100 years time. During writing lessons we are now learning how to write an information report and have enjoyed writing about made up animals such as a pugit (pug/rabbit) and a elefly (elephant/fly).
