2020 Student Academic Support and Student Excellence Programs

Learning Support Programs

At Black Rock Primary School we endeavour to provide a program that enables individual students to reach their full potential.  This is achieved through:

  • Differentiated curriculum
  • Individual learning plans
  • Learning support programs

Differentiated Classroom Programs

Within the classrooms teachers work together to develop and implement programs that are tailored to individual needs. Teachers use a range of assessment strategies to identify student strengths and where a student may require support.

Learning Support

The Learning Support teachers works closely with classroom teachers, providing teachers with assistance to plan and provide support that enables students to meet their individual needs. Support at Black Rock Primary School takes a variety of forms:

  • Teacher support to identifying specific student learning needs for individual students, assisting in designing strategies and classroom programs.
  • Teachers working with the student support group (SSG), often consisting of educational experts, parents and the student, to ensure facilitation of processes and strategies to maximise learning opportunities for students identified with a particular learning need.
  • From Foundation to Year Two small groups or individual students may be withdrawn during the course of the week to participate in further learning activities. These groups are fluid and are identified through teacher assessment. They are flexible as the learning needs of the students change.

The Learning Enhancement Team to work alongside the classroom teachers for 2020 are Krystal Frazer (F-2 ), Lyn Pedler (Specialised Literacy Assistance Program) and

Emily Harvey (3-6).

Student Individual Learning Plans

If deemed necessary, teachers set goals for students to achieve and work through the strategies at home and at school that will be used to support each child achieve these individual goals. Teachers will share these learning plans during a time that is mutually agreed upon with the student’s classroom teacher and parents. A member of the Learning Support Team or the Leadership team may attend this meeting if appropriate.

Victorian Student Excellence Program

Black Rock Primary School will be joining the Victorian Student Excellence program in 2020 as part of our whole-school approach to provide structured learning extension programs for high-ability students. The program aims to lift the learning, engagement and wellbeing of high-ability students and help them thrive now and into the future.

Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series

High-ability students from Foundation to Year 6 will benefit from the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series. From Term 3, 2020, schools will be able to nominate students to take part in activities from the series according to their abilities and interests. The series of excursions and incursions will include activities across all areas of the curriculum and will be delivered face-to-face and virtually by Tech Schools, partner organisations and universities. The series will include incursions and excursions across all areas of the curriculum, including science, languages and the arts.

The above programs will run in addition to existing programs, activities and practices that support student enrichment and extension at Black Rock PS, which include:

  • Differentiation within the classroom on an ongoing basis (F-6)
  • Acceleration of content delivered in class (F-6)
