Focus on Year 10 - Making decisions for the future; Transitioning into a Senior School Programme

Over the last few months, Year 10 students, and their parents have been engaging in activities directed towards helping these students to make good and informed decisions about their journey over the final two years of their secondary school life and to a pathway beyond school. The goal of these activities is for our students to be able to choose options for this journey, based on an understanding of themselves, their own needs and goals and on an understanding of the multiple options open to them. Many Year 10 parents have been involved as we have endeavoured to assist them to become informed support agents in this process.

Careers Fast Track Programme

In the weeks prior to and following the first term holidays, Year 10 students have participated in this program that is designed to assist them to be able to understand and articulate an awareness and appreciation of their interests, strengths, personality traits, values and skills. This is fundamental to being able to identify, at least the beginnings of, a life journey that will involve work that provides a sense of fulfillment, satisfaction and happiness. All students now have a personalised portfolio with all the outcomes and finding of this research. The programme culminated with a thirty minute individual interview with a careers counsellor who went through the portfolio and drew together the findings there. Part of the discussion involved looking at what senior school programme might be most appropriate and what subjects should form the core of the student’s programme.

We urge parents to ask to see your student’s portfolio and to use it as a basis for discussions about planning for the future.

It needs to be stressed that this programme is not the end of the matter and nor does it tell the student what they should be. That, in the end is a decision for the student. It is a formal start to what will be a lifelong journey that will involve many changes as the young person’s knowledge and awareness changes and as their life circumstances change.

Parents as Career Transition Support (PACTS)

An enthusiastic group of Year 10 parents have been meeting with Careers Staff over the last two Wednesday nights in a workshop designed to help them to understand and assist the journey that their students are undertaking at this stage of their lives. We have examined the influences on student decision making, how parents can enter and assist in that conversation and exploration and what we at Brighton Secondary College are attempting to do to assist in this journey. We would like to thank those parents for being involved and engaging so openly and freely.

What comes next?

  • We will be giving students more information about how to plan and construct their senior programme. Mainstream students will receive a two year plan template whilst SEAL will receive a three year plan, along with guidelines and principles of selection.
  • Between the 20th and 27th June, all Year 10 students will have an individual interview with Careers Staff or Ms Sentry. These appointments are now on the students’ Compass schedules. This will be a formal discussion of students’ goals and plans and a moment where we will be able to give individualised advice.
  • Early in Term 3, the web portal will open where students will be able enter their preferences for 2020.

Senior School staff and Careers Staff are grateful for the engagement in this process by students and parents.

Parents and students are encouraged to contact careers staff at any time with further questions or to discuss options.

Upcoming Careers Events

In Courses & Careers News, there is much from the universities and plenty of industry news.

The third item is a run down of early entry programs. These are programs that give Year 12  students the chance to receive early offers, or offers for courses at lower than normal ATARs. Please not that Brighton is not part of the RMIT SNAP program.
