Día de los Muertos arrives at Edgars Creek Secondary College!
Our Year 7 and Year 8 Spanish elective students have spent this term learning about Dia de los Muertos festival (Day of the Dead) which originated in Mexico. Students ended the unit with a lunchtime celebration on 8th November filled with tacos, decorations, costumes, face painting and piñatas! Our Year 7 students, Brodie and Reina, explain:
On Friday the 8th of November, Edgars Creek Secondary College had a large celebration for the Day Of the Dead. Lots of preparation went into this day. We created las flores (flowers), papel picado (paper cut outs) & las calaveras (skulls) for our grand fiesta. But the fiesta was to celebrate the end of our Day of the Dead topic in Spanish. We learnt about the Aztecs, Mayans and ancient Mesoamerica, their religions and sacred rituals. We also learnt how the Day of the Dead celebrations of Mexico came to be and so we had our own festive celebrations at school. Many people came dressed up in Day of the Death themed attire, students also came to school with painted faces of skulls. At lunch we had tacos and had many other activities. We had a wonderful pinata, music and more face painting! Overall it was a wonderful end of topic celebration for The Day of the Dead! Reina, 7A
The 8th of November was the day where students, teachers, and staff, were to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos at ECSC, also known as the Day of the Dead. Many were dressed up for this occasion and their costumes were related to Dia de Los Muertos. Students were able to design a calavera (also known as a skull), following up with watching Disney’s Coco, throughout their classes. Multiple activities, including face painting, hitting the piñata and music were being played in the library, throughout lunchtime. Tacos were being sold for a gold coin donation in the PLC room, with toppings such as; chicken, salsa, cheese, and more. The weather was a bit damp, but everyone had a fun time and was pleased with the activities and tacos. Brodie, 7D
