Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Exciting times in the Maths department at Edgars Creek!

In addition to our Scaffolding Numeracy program, which addresses students' needs in terms of their multiplicative thinking, we have recently implemented a second program that challenges students' ideas of how we learn in Maths.

Our Reciprocal Teaching classes are challenging students to talk and write about their problem solving process. The focus in these classes is not on what the answer is, rather, our students are learning how to decipher worded problems. Some of the skills they are developing include:

          - working collaboratively

          - reading comprehension

          - mathematical literacy

          - metacognitive skills - reflecting on their thinking

Our students are choosing problems that are "just right" for them - a problem that challenges them to think, but is not out of reach. They are also learning how to choose a working partner who "thinks at a similar speed". These skills are an important part of developing as a mature, engaged and motivated learner.

We are very proud of the way students in both years 7 and 8 have embraced learning in Maths this year, and with these programs supplementing their daily Maths lessons, the future looks bright!
