Year 7 Excursion to the Enchanted Gardens

Sasha Polikushan, Year 7

On Thursday 24 November, while next year's incoming Year 7s had their Orientation Day at School, the current cohort of Year 7s went to the Enchanted Gardens at Arthurs Seat.

After an hour and a half of being on the bus, we had the chance to take part in many fun and entertaining activities at the Enchanted Gardens.

We completed mazes, went on tube slides and spent time with each other. It was a fun way to spend our end-of-year Celebration Day, one of the last days of Year 7.

Everyone had a great time going to the rightfully-named ‘enchanted garden’ and came back home with good memories of this excursion.

Year 9 Emerge Program

Year 9 Impact Team

To kickstart and generate excitement for their 2023 Impact Journey, incoming Year 9 students recently took part in the Year 9 Emerge Program.

As part of the program, students participated in a safe travel program, identified key landmarks in the CBD and established standards and expectations. We look forward to 2023!

Creative Writing Club Zine - To Be volume 1

Tamara Drazic, Library Service and Digital Resourcing Assistant

The Kilvington creative writing club has published its first issue of a little zine, which the students have titled To Be.

Here’s a link to the digital flipbook on Issuu. We also have physical copies available in the library if anyone wants to take a look. What a fantastic effort by the students involved!

Australian Mathematics Competition and Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad

Helen Cole,  Academic Dean of Mathematics

On 3 August, many students took part in the Australian Mathematics Competition. Their certificates finally arrived this week and Kilvington did very well, receiving 32 Credits, 23 Distinctions and 4 High Distinctions.

Special congratulations to the following High Distinction winners who were in the top 1% of their year level in Victoria: Oscar Le, Caleb Mendez, Darcy Donohue and Jude Teo.

Caleb and Jude also participated in the Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad, a 4-hour competition comprising 10 questions. Congratulations to Caleb who achieved a Credit in the Olympiad.

VCE Media and Theatre Studies

Jasmine Parry, Year 11

The VCE Media and Theatre Studies classes had a brilliant start to Early Commencement and the month of December with the chance to participate as the studio audience in the production of the Channel 9 game show, ‘Millionaire Hotseat’.

The opportunity to see the operations of a live TV set was certainly an experience to remember, with the interactions between the crew, ourselves and Eddie McGuire resulting in lots of laughs and some very special photos.

While unfortunately none of us returned with a million dollars, we did learn some enlightening facts and gained insight into what happens behind the scenes of the show!

Junior and Senior school planners

We think Art Captain, Georgia Volakakis (Year 11), has done a fantastic job of designing the 2023 Junior and Senior school planners. Well done Georgia!

JUNIOR SCHOOL CHRISTMAS GIFT DRIVE

How wonderful to belong to such a generous community! The large collection of beautiful gifts from the Junior School will be donated to Eat Up, who will distribute them to families who were recently affected by the floods in Victoria.

We have no doubt that these gifts will make many children (and their parents) very happy. A big thank you to our Kilvington families.

WORLD KINDNESS DAY

For World Kindness Day, we ran an extra special food drive to assist our charity partners Eat Up Australia, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Fareshare and the Lighthouse Foundation.

This year, the Junior School participated in a new initiative, making farewell cards for our valedictorians. Our Year 12 cohort were delighted to receive these cards at their Valedictory dinner!

VIP SUPPORTERS EVENT AT THE ASYLUM SEEKER RESOURCE CENTRE

I recently attended a VIP supporters event at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) with four of our students in attendance: Joanne Lee and Agrata Sharma (Year 11) and Chloe Dickens and Ruby Wilson (Year 10).

We were fortunate to hear three wonderful speakers from the ASRC speak about the important work that the organisation is doing: Kon Karapanagiotidis (CEO and Founder), Hannah Dickinson (Principal Solicitor) and Jana Favero (Director of Advocacy and Campaigns).

It was the perfect opportunity for the Year 11s to get an understanding of the charity as they will continue their strong partnership with the ASRC next year.

Students also dropped off some essential much-needed items to their food bank from our recent World Kindness Day Food Drive.

At Kilvington, we continue to be Humans Of Purpose and Empathy.
