Kinder Garden Day
Last week, our Grade 6 students worked with their Kinder buddies on a range of garden activities. They planted pea, bean and sunflower seeds. They potted up strawberry plants and also planted flowers in some new planter boxes that will be added to the cubby house. It was great to see our children working together on these activities. Our Grade 6 students were wonderful with their buddies, using friendly, encouraging and positive language with their Kinder buddies.
Planting Tomatoes
With the recent Spring weather settling down a bit, we managed to plant many tomato plants with Grade 4 students last week. We planted Red Cherry, Cherokee, Gross Liss and Mortgage lifter varieties. Our tomatoes will be used in our school lunch program.
First Nations Excursion
Last Friday, First Nations students from Grades 4-6, went on a special tour to explore ideas for a new Aboriginal Gathering space and bush tucker garden we are thinking of creating at John Paul II. We checked out an Aboriginal midden at the Rokeby Police Academy, visited St Aloysius and St Mary’s Catholic Schools to look at their sand circles, signage, artwork and gardens. After this, we visited the Nipaluna Nursery in New Town to investigate plants we might be able to include in our new garden. On the way back to school, we dropped in at the Clarendon Vale Child and Family Centre to look at their yarning circle and fire pit.
We had a great day collecting lots of great ideas for our new Aboriginal gathering space!
