English

Term 4 has seen our stage 4 students examine new text types and content, giving our students a taste of the variety that is offered to them in the world of English.

Year 7 students undertook an introductory unit on the study of film - immersing themselves in the auditory and visual elements that help to shape meaning to audiences. Their assessment task asked the students to analyse film techniques, and how they impact their understanding of the text presented to them, in real time.

Year 8 students received their first taste of Shakespeare, studying the historical context in which he wrote as well as the dramatic elements that help to stage his masterpieces. In particular, their assessment task asked the students to step out of their comfort zone and show their understanding of a soliloquy from Othello in front of their peers; utilising props, vocal effects and costume to reveal the inner feelings of a character.

Stage 5 students continued to develop their analytical skills with year 9 students studying representations of people in crisis. The initial exploration of poetry from the battle fields of World War 1 had students analysing the ways that poetry can convey complex emotional tensions, while their study of more contemporary texts about refugees reminded students of the power of storytelling and song in getting a message across.

Year 10 students mixed their analysis of Bruce Dawe’s poetry with their own compositional writing. A particular focus for year 10 students was the development and communication of a believable character. Many students commented on how much they enjoyed following the writing process during this unit and I implore students to continue this enthusiasm as they begin their students in stage 6.

Finally, a massive congratulations should go out to our new HSC 2026 students on completing their first school based assessment task. All teachers, across English Standard, Advanced and Studies, have commented on the levels of application that students have put into drafting their tasks. With continued perseverance, these students will continue to see vast improvements in their writing.
