What a year of challenging and diverse scientific exploration it has been for our students! The Science Department is proud to reflect on the many hands-on learning opportunities, successful competitions, and outstanding individual achievements demonstrated across all stages.

Early in the year, a dedicated group of Year 10 students took part in the exciting Science and Engineering Challenge on 1st April. This valuable event encouraged teamwork and creativity as students designed and built complex projects, including load-bearing bridges, functional wind turbines, gliders, and an electricity distribution system. We extend sincere gratitude to the organising partners: The University of Newcastle, Inland Rail Skills Academy, Kooringal Rotary Club, Riverina Water, Transgrid, and Nixons Engineering for providing this important real-world learning experience.

Later in the term, Year 9 and 10 students were immersed in the world of forensic investigation during the thrilling workshop A Case of Identity. Acting in the role of detectives, students applied critical and creative thinking skills to solve a complex, fictional crime involving a missing person.

This session was highly practical, requiring students to analyse genuine forensic evidence, including:

  • Entomology (using insect evidence)
  • Trace Evidence and Fingerprints
  • Toxicology (substance analysis)

Beyond the scientific skills, the workshop also explored important social themes such as cyber safety, the dangers of drink spiking, and the consequences of taking risks, proving a valuable experience both scientifically and socially.

The year concluded on a high note with the recognition of outstanding student effort and achievement:

Ashton Ramsay was awarded the prestigious Notre Dame Science Award for Year 12.

Jett Gilbey was the well-deserved winner of the Year 10 ENIRGI Science Award.
