Hello from the Autism Inclusion Teacher,

Sports Day - Making It a Positive Experience for Everyone

With Sports Day just around the corner, it’s a great time to think about how the day feels for different children.

Sports Day is a special event on our school calendar. It is a chance for students to be outdoors, enjoy time with friends, and celebrate teamwork and school spirit. For many, it’s an exciting highlight of the year but for others, it can feel a bit overwhelming. Things like loud noises, changes to routine, performing in front of others, big crowds, waiting turns, unfamiliar activities, or the ups and downs of winning and losing can be tricky. It’s so important that we work together to support all students by giving them reassurance, offer breaks when needed, and celebrate their effort just as much as the results.

As a school community, we want every child to feel supported, included, and proud of what they achieve on Sports Day. Here are some simple ways we can help:

  • Clear routines: Sharing the day’s schedule or using visuals can help reduce uncertainty (I have included the program for you to discuss with your child prior to Sports Day).
  • Quiet spaces: Providing a calm area gives children the option to step away and reset if they need to. At HEPS, the interoception room will be open throughout the day to support our students.
  • Comfort tools: Allowing items like hats, sunglasses, or headphones can make the environment easier to manage. There will be a sensory bag left at the first aid tent for students to use. This includes headphones and fidgets.
  • Flexible participation: Remembering that involvement looks different for everyone; some children may run races, while others prefer cheering or helping in other ways.
  • Celebrating effort: Focusing on trying your best, being a good teammate, and having fun ensures every child leaves the day feeling proud.

At the heart of Sports Day is belonging, joy, and community. By recognising and supporting the different ways children experience the day, we can make sure every student whether they love racing down the track or prefer cheering from the sidelines has a positive and memorable experience.

Upcoming Events

Get excited for a trucktacular day! Trucks on Tour will be back Friday 10 October 2025. From 1-2pm we host a sensory hour. This allows families who seek a quieter experience to attend as horns and loud devices are silenced and demonstrations end. Spectrum Connect Inc. will host a sensory refuge along with a quiet activity zone for the events duration.
