State School Spectacular

Our Spec Experience
By Ezra and Ishaan Grade 5
We would like to share with you our wonderful experience at the Victorian State School Spectacular 2025, “On Air!” This event brought together over 2,500 students from state schools across Victoria.
We were part of the mass choir. We started practicing at the beginning of the year, and over time we worked our way up from simply learning the songs to confidently singing and dancing with ease.
We performed this huge event at John Cain Arena, and it was a big accomplishment because it was also the 30th anniversary of the Spectacular. Along the way, we also had rehearsals at Melbourne Town Hall and Jells Park Primary School.
In Spec, we learned 14 songs and 8 dances. A lot of effort went into making it all come together, and everyone worked super hard. We all grew enormously from the experience. Performing in front of thousands helped us build confidence, resilience, and teamwork, while backstage we developed discipline, time management, and the ability to support one another.
It all began when we auditioned in mid-October. About a month later, we got our results—20 students were chosen to become the WHPS Spec Team! From the start of the year, we learned the songs and dance moves, and we grooved along with the music. It was an amazing experience.
Some highlights of our year of hard work, singing, and dancing including all the rehearsals, watching ourselves grow over time, and of course, the actual performance.
We would definitely recommend Spec if you love singing, dancing, and having fun. Even if you feel a little shy, that’s okay, because everyone there is so supportive.
We feel very proud to have been part of this year’s Spectacular. It gave us the opportunity to shine in ways we never expected. The memories, skills, and friendships we made will stay with us forever.
We would also like to say a big thank you to Mrs Roughton and Ms Quinn for making this possible.
Spectacular Is truly spectacular indeed Thank You!!
Spec Reflection

The VSSS Rehearsals and show was a really fun experience! From the principal vocalists, to the singing, to the principal dancers, to the shiny lights. Our school was in the Mass Choir, and not only did we do sing, but we also did lots of dancing.
The first big rehearsal at John Cain Arena that we had was exciting for us newbies. On the bus ride there, we enjoyed talking about what it would be like in the arena and what our favourite songs were. We were excited to sing and dance and to see the main performers unleash their amazing voices. The most popular songs that we sung were ‘Come Alive’ from The Greatest Showman and ‘Learning to Fly’. We also enjoyed dancing to, ‘Freed from Desire’ by GALA.
The second day of rehearsals was when we had our full-dress rehearsal. It was a long 7am to 7pm day full of singing but lots of fun spending the whole day with friends and other schools. We were tired at the end of the day, but we still had just enough energy to sing on our bus ride back to school. My friends and I sung our heads off to K-Pop Demon Hunters songs.
On Saturday, it was our big performance day. We had a matinee performance during the day which had more people than I had expected and an evening performance. All our dancing and singing practise over the last 6 months had really paid off, and we were proud to show what we had learnt to the audience. Our team of 20 students had such an incredible experience. We will fondly remember our time doing State School Spectacular.
