Fire Carriers

Aboriginal Flag
The Aboriginal flag has the colours red, yellow and black with all them meaning something. Red symbolises the earth and the ochre used in Aboriginal ceremonies, reflecting the deep connection to the land. Yellow represents the sun, which is seen as a life-giving force. And the black represents the Aboriginal people of Australia.
Designer
The flag was designed by Harold Thomas, a Luritja man, in 1971. It was first flown at a land rights rally in Adelaide on 9 July 1971, which is now recognized as National Aborigine's Day.
Official Recognition
The flag was officially recognised by the Australian government under the Flags Act 1953 on 14 July 1995, alongside the Torres Strait Islander flag. This recognition was aimed at promoting reconciliation and acknowledging the flag's significance to the Aboriginal community.

FIRE Carrier Program – 2026
In 2026, the FIRE Carrier program at OLA will see some exciting changes. From next year, the program will be led by our Grade 5 student leaders. This adjustment allows our Grade 6 leaders to focus on other leadership opportunities, while also providing Grade 5 students with the chance to showcase their leadership skills.
Grade 4 students have been invited to apply for these positions today and FIRE Carriers will be chosen through a voting process, with results based on 50% student votes and 50% staff votes. Voters will be asked to nominate four candidates, in preference order, who they believe will be suitable FIRE Carriers for OLA. We look forward to beginning the application process and working with the 2026 FIRE Carriers.
