St Francis Xavier has 15 students from Year 6 who have volunteered their time in this Sydney Catholic Schools initiative, providing them with a unique faith-based experience in our school. Inspired by Pope Francis, they are learning how to become leaders who are willing to ‘get off the couch and leave their mark’. The purpose of this program is to promote community involvement and foster a love of service, linking to our school motto - ‘Serviam’. The Pope Francis students have been meeting during their lunchtime with Miss Buckley, Mrs Seric, and myself to discuss school initiatives and ideas that contribute to a community authentically experiencing God in their lives and continuing the mission of Jesus. The students have already implemented the following:

  • Playground clean up - Pope Francis students tidy up the playgrounds using rubbish-collecting tools and cleaning kits.
  • Lunchtime clubs - Pope Francis students have offered their time to referee or lead a sports club on the primary side to support those in Kindergarten to Year 2.
  • Canteen helpers - Pope Francis students have been volunteering their time to help Mrs Radano in the canteen to carry heavy tubs of lunch orders to all classes across the school.
  • Prayer service leaders - Pope Francis students have had the opportunity to lead and run prayer services, particularly for RUOK? Day.

This program provides Year 6 students with the opportunity to review who Pope Francis is, what it means to belong to a school and Parish community and how we are many people, who are part of one body, the Catholic Church community.

We look forward to continuing our journey with the Pope Francis

students in Year 6 for the remainder of the year.
