Science Week

This year, National Science Week at Mount Carmel stretched into a full “Science Fortnight" and beyond, with every class from Kindergarten through to Year 6 enjoying hands-on experiences in the Secondary Science labs.
Our youngest learners explored colours, while Year 1 students, decked out in their own miniature lab coats, investigated what dissolves in water. Year 2 discovered which materials conduct electricity, Year 3 explored sinking and floating, and Year 4 practiced making careful observations with the ever-popular “Dancing Raisins.” Meanwhile, Year 5 had the chance to explore the world through microscopes, and Year 6 created rainbows in test tubes using acids, bases, and indicators.
The atmosphere in the labs was electric, filled with curiosity, excitement, and plenty of “wow” moments. It was a joy to watch our primary students’ sense of wonder grow as they engaged with science in meaningful ways. We hope this enthusiasm continues to inspire them as they move into secondary school and beyond, nurturing a lifelong love of Science.
Lynda Hewitt - Head of Science
Recently, our College celebrated Science Week, and our Prep students had a fantastic time engaging in a variety of hands-on activities. A highlight was our visit to the Science Lab, where we joined Mrs Neyland and Ms Hewitt for some exciting experiments exploring light and colour. Mrs Neyland introduced the students to a light box and prisms, showing them how white light can be split into a rainbow. Meanwhile, Ms Hewitt led a fun experiment using coloured markers, paper towels, and water to demonstrate how colours can mix and separate.
Back in the classroom, we wrapped up our science unit on materials with the "Three Little Pigs" challenge. In small groups, the girls were tasked with building a house strong enough to keep the pigs safe from the wolf. The twist? Each group was assigned a specific material to build with! The challenge concluded with lots of laughter as we tested the strength of our houses using Ms Wheeldon’s wolf puppet and a hairdryer. It was a fun and memorable way to apply our learning!
