From the Assistant Principal: Wellbeing

Supporting Our Young People
Supporting our young people to increase their motivation and build self-confidence has obvious benefits for their wellbeing. Self-confidence allows teenagers to make decisions with a sense of control, have increased determination and respond with resilience, viewing set backs as learning opportunities.
However, as we know, building confidence can be challenging; it requires much more than a parent just giving affirmation and praise. Our SchoolTV has many resources that can help guide parents. Hannah Reich’s article 'How to help your distracted teen find motivation and focus for school' suggests setting up good routines and guiding our young people to learn time management. Debbie McQuaid also has good advice about supporting our teens to ‘Embrace failures and to stop fixing their problems’ with good reminders about the need for social media boundaries. We should never underestimate the worth of a supportive and encouraging home environment.

Safe Travel Habits
On another note, conversations with your child reminding them about safe travel habits are good to have regularly. Whether students are walking, cycling, catching the bus, or getting a lift, sensible habits are important. Remind your child to keep to the footpaths and use pedestrian crossings where possible with no shortcuts across Sturt Street. When using public transport, students should be aware of their surroundings. Distractions like loud music or texting should be avoided, and if it’s a dark morning or afternoon, encourage a cycling teen to wear something reflective. If students feel unsafe while travelling, they should enlist the help of other students or adults and report any concerns to home and our College.
