Reading in Term 3

Term 3 is a great time for reading! The weather is chilly, and we are ready to rest and look inside ourselves. To help with this, we are continuing to offer a range of reading exposures to our junior students.

Year 7s are reading their class novel. ‘Rabbit Soldier Angel Thief’, by Katrina Nannestad in small groups with their English teacher and the librarian, focusing on modelling and reflective reading. We were very fortunate to host the author herself in Week One. Katrina worked with all of our Year 7 classes, exploring the Historical Fiction genre and offering insights into the writing process. Our students were very engaged and had many thoughtful questions to ask of her. During lunchtime, we hosted a writing workshop for a smaller group of students, where Katrina focused on character development. Our young writers loved this and were keen for more time with her!

In our reading classes with Year 8s and 9s we are continuing to shine a spotlight on different parts of our collection. We aim to expose students to a wide range of genres, styles, themes and ideas over the three year reading program, using these structured exposures to help build confidence in independent text selection. Our Year 8s are currently exploring Dystopian Fiction, a real contrast to their current English text, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Meanwhile, Year 9s are exploring Historical Fiction, exploring novels across different time periods.

Our lunchtime groups continue in their lively fashion. Our Shadow Judges have read the 2025 CBCA shortlist for Older Readers, and have voted on their own favourite. We look forward to comparing and contrasting this with the official choice, which will be announced in Book Week. Our Book Clubbers have loved making wax seals for their Hogwarts letters, and coming to meet, mingle and talk all things books and reading with their friends.

Clickview is an online platform that provides students with access to a vast library of educational videos and resources that are aligned with the curriculum. In addition to supporting learning across different subjects and year levels, there is plenty of recreational content on there as well, including popular movies rated by age group – perfect for the rainy afternoons we are experiencing!
