YES Excursion

On the 25th of June, the Year 10 and 11 Senior School SRC members had the pleasure of attending the Youth Entrepreneur Summit (YES) in Brimbank. The day was full of fun, inspiration and innovation.

We participated in many activities such as listening to the riveting stories of young successful entrepreneurs who were once just like us, learning about how body language and facial expression can keep audiences engaged when speaking, and even presented our own pitches on ideas for businesses.

Keynote speeches from entrepreneurs Yesha Patel, who recognised the issue of textile waste and founded ‘After' to recycle discarded clothing, and Julia Truong, who built her career from the ground up, taking every opportunity that came her way to become the founder or co-founder of eight businesses - inspired us to think in solutions, seize opportunities, and 'just do it'.

The Youth Entrepreneur Summit was an all-round wonderful experience that taught us so much. I would even go as far as to say that we are well on our way to becoming young entrepreneurs ourselves!

Article by Nathan Cutajar, Year 10 Leader

From 16 to 20 June, our Year 10 students stepped beyond the classroom walls and into the world of work as part of our annual Work Experience Program. This invaluable opportunity allowed students to explore a wide range of industries, gain firsthand insight into professional environments, and reflect on potential career pathways.

Students were placed across a diverse array of settings including education, healthcare, retail, trades, legal firms, IT, media, and more. Whether shadowing a physiotherapist, working on a construction site, assisting in a primary classroom, or learning the ropes of a corporate office, each student took on the challenge with maturity, curiosity, and enthusiasm.

The feedback from both students and employers has been overwhelmingly positive. Employers consistently praised the professionalism, communication skills, and eagerness to learn demonstrated by our students. Many commented on how quickly they adapted to new environments and took initiative in unfamiliar settings.

Equally, students shared that the week opened their eyes to the realities of full-time work, what it means to be punctual, how to communicate in a workplace, and the importance of teamwork and responsibility. For many, it has been a formative experience that will influence their subject selections and long-term career goals.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the employers and mentors who generously hosted and supported our students throughout the week. Your time and guidance have had a meaningful impact.

Congratulations to our Year 10 cohort for representing the College with such integrity and enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing how this experience shapes your future learning and aspiration.

VCE Drama Ensemble Performance Night: Memories – Postcards of Identity

This year’s VCE Drama Ensemble prescribed topic aimed to explore the widest possible range of creative and dramatic responses that focused on the importance of ‘memories’ to us and how they influence, shape and define our identity.

Our VCE Drama students set about brainstorming, researching, and using a range of playmaking and performance-making techniques to devise shows that explored the questions:

Is our memory better or worse than a computer’s?

Why are we always wanting more and more memory on our electronic devices?

Is it because we can’t store our own memories anymore?

Are we so obsessed with memories we are afraid we’ll forget them?

How many selfies does one need of one’s self?

Are selfies the new postcard?

Does anyone still write and send a postcard to anyone anymore?

COMPANY TWELVE25s’ & COMPANY ELEVEN26’s then performed their devised shows in the M18 Blackbox Theatre to the delight of a packed audience of appreciative family and friends, staff, current students, and the largest group of alumni Overnewton VCE Drama students we have seen.

These performances were also assessed, by guest VCE assessors, as part of their outcomes for Units 1&3 which also serve as a priceless preparation for their solo performance making process in Units 2&4.

Memories – Postcards of Identity was indeed a theatrical experience that all who attended will remember fondly.
