This semester, Year 9 Visual Communication Design students have been working on their Rock Band design project. This project requires them to work in two different design fields: fashion design and environmental design. Their fashion design project is to create a costume for a music performer of their choice. Part of the design process students follow to complete this work is to study drawing the human form.

They learn about the proportions of different body parts and how to capture movement and gesture, to make their final costume designs look more realistic. The work completed in the environmental design field is to create a theatre set design for their chosen performer. This involves using perspective drawing and creating architectural plans before completing a 3D model of their final design. The skills that students develop through this introduction to two different design fields can be used as valuable prior learning for those seeking to pursue Visual Communication Design or Art electives in Year 10 and beyond.
