Curriculum News

English

This term the students will be integrating all aspects of the English Curriculum through a novel study using the Ochre prescribed format.

Reading and Viewing

The text titled ‘Convict Boy’ takes students on a journey out of their own world and into the intriguing world of human history and diversity. They will read about people with different cultural, racial and belief systems. The students will explore this novel and will revise techniques of comprehension to further expand their knowledge of the text.

The related activities will aim to enrich their content understanding in relation to themselves and others.

Writing

The focal point in writing this term will be Information Reports and Narratives, explored through the novel study. A particular emphasis will be placed on the colonisation of Australia, specifically through the perspective of a convict. Students will learn strategies to build sentence structure with the aim of writing summaries about the novel. They will continue to develop the structure and language features required to write texts related to specific genres. Additionally, building vocabulary and strategies to spell more complex words, such as using suffixes and prefixes, will be incorporated.

Speaking and Listening

In Speaking and Listening, we will continue to support students in developing their capacity to speak confidently and with expression about an increasing range of topics. They will utilise these skills during prayer and liturgy, leadership activities, and projects on important people in our faith community and events in history. This semester, students will focus on strategies for providing and receiving feedback as part of the curriculum.

Maths

In Mathematics we shall continue to work across the Year Level using Ochre as our Maths Program

YEAR 5

Number and Algebra

The Year 5 students will continue to develop their understanding of fractions as whole numbers, focusing on adding and subtracting fractions with the same and related denominators using various strategies. They will explore the four operations and algebraic patterns, enhancing their problem-solving skills through worded and multi-step problems. Additionally, students will revise and extend their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages, exploring the relationships between these and whole numbers.

Measurement

The Year 5 students will continue to develop their understanding of measurement by selecting appropriate metric units for length, mass, and capacity. They will also learn to use smaller units or combinations of units to obtain more accurate measurements.

Shapes, Lines and Angles

The Year 5 students will measure and compare 2D and 3D shapes. They will measure angles in degrees using appropriate tools, including a protractor, and relate these measurements to angle types.

Location

The Year 5 students will construct a grid coordinate system that uses coordinates to locate positions within a space; use coordinates and directional language to describe position and movement.

YEAR 6

Number & Algebra

This term Year 6 students will continue to develop their understanding of Fractions adding and subtracting unrelated denominators. They will work on decimals using the base-10 system to apply and extend the application of decimals using multiplication and division. In Decimals they will interpret, compare and order numbers with more than 2 decimal places, including numbers greater than one, using place value understanding and represent these on a number line.

Measurement and Geometry

The Year 6 Unit on Measurement will focus on Cartesian planes incorporating positive and negative integers in solving problems. They will measure, identify equivalences, and convert units using the base-10 system when measuring length, mass, and capacity. Students will work on reading calendars, timetables, and schedules. They will also compare 12-hour and 24-hour time systems and convert between them.

Shapes, Lines and Angles

In Year 6 the unit on Shapes Lines and Angles will focus on the properties of 2D & 3D shapes with particular emphasis on their relationship to angles.

Religion

Students will continue their Spirit filled and Confirmation journey and understand the role it has in their lives and the Catholic faith. In this unit the students will investigate the origins and history of their faith and that of our Catholic Faith. Students will explore the early history timeline of our Catholic faith in Australia and its significant events. They will research significant people in our church’s history and the contributions that they have made to our Australian society. They will learn about other faiths that make up our diverse country and the ‘Golden Rule’ that they convey. Students will reflect and compare these in relation to our own Catholic faith and its message.

Inquiry

Our unit this term is about the history of migration and settlement of Australia from the 1800’s until the Federation incorporating the concept of social justice. The students will explore and research the events that occurred during this period and the impacts that they made including that of our Indigenous people. They will investigate the origins of people who migrated to Australia during this time and reasons that brought them here. The students will explore the diversity of these groups, the values, and cultural aspects that have contributed to our Australian way of life.  A timeline will be constructed to demonstrate these significant historical events.

Social and Emotional Wellbeing - Help Seeking

The Wellbeing focus for this term is ‘Help Seeking’. This unit will focus on identifying situations in which they should seek help in working through problems, identify a list of trusted people to seek out when needing help and normalise and de-stigmatise help-seeking behaviour. Students will continue to develop their understanding of eSafety and who can support them in the digital world by completing several modules on the topic.
