Week 6 and 7
Foundation students continued their discovery into creating 3D sculpture. We talked about two artists that use circles in their work. We identified coloured circles, circles inside circles and circles around circles. We used our favourite Colourslicks and created an interesting surface on our coloured paper bags. Stuffing our bags with scrap fabric made our bags puffy and round ready to safely poke holes with a needle for adding pipe-cleaner legs. How many eyes does a spider have? Next week we will add the eyes and all of the embellishments to finish our Circle Spiders.
Circles are everywhere for our junior artists! Grade 1s also looked at artists that use circles in their work. We also used Colourslicks to draw concentric on hessian, a really satisfying, textural experience! We learned how to measure and cut thread and safely thread a needle. I am so proud of the Grade 1s! They have so much patience and pride when completing their running stitches with brightly coloured wool. Just look at the concentration on their faces!
Grade 2 artists practiced their stitching today and helped one another to thread their measured thread and tie knots ready to sew. Sewing takes lots of concentration and focus; a skill the grade 2s have in bucket loads. The highlight of my day was when the students exclaimed how much they loved sewing and that they could keep sewing all day!
Our Mirka Mora inspired dolls are coming along beautifully. Students have hand sewn their pieces together to create a pocket-like form. Once stuffed, the students sewed their seams shut then decorated the backs of their dolls with fabric markers. More decorations, such as sequins, dimensional paints and glitter will be added to bring our creatures to life!
If you are coming along to our Trivia Night this Friday, you have the chance to bid on this incredible artwork created and donated by artist educators Katrina Frazer and Mrs Lawn! It's a supersized, super coloured trophy with the most intricately painted rainbow details and lots and LOTS of gold and lustre. Come and see the artwork on display in the front office. It could be yours!
