HEALTH

A CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS

Health 2023 has been absolutely delightful! A diverse range of amazing foods have been carefully created. An extensive amount of learning (and fun) has been experienced across all subject areas of Health.

As Health Learning Area Manager, I am proud and very fortunate to be a part of such a talented, successful and motivated team who consistently deliver high quality knowledge and support to our students.

Year 7 Food Technology

Over the course of 2023, the students have delighted many newsletter readers with their commendable skills and capabilities in the kitchen. In theory lessons, the students have been working towards establishing an understanding of nutrition, food choices and healthy living and have investigated and selected strategies to promote health. They have been investigating the characteristics and properties of food techniques when creating solutions for healthy eating. They are also very skilled at providing a detailed sensory analysis on a range of food products.

Thank you to all Year 7s for bringing such delight to our kitchen spaces; your enthusiasm and overall enjoyment of cooking and learning new skills is why we are such a successful team.

Year 9 Food Technology

To support the importance of cross curricular studies, students have successfully been able to link their Science knowledge with Food Technology. The STEAM coursework supports students’ ability to think critically to solve problems, and design and create solutions. Throughout 2023, the students have investigated the principles of food safety, preservation, preparation, presentation and sensory perceptions influence the creation of food solutions for healthy eating.

A very big shout out goes to all the Year 9 students who participated in Food Technology in 2023. We are very proud of your achievements and look forward to seeing you back in the kitchen in 2024.

Budding 2023 master chefs in Year 10 Food Technology had the opportunity to extend their knowledge regarding food culture and cuisine by investigating Indigenous foods and foods from around the world. The ‘Main meal investigation’ task is always a crowd pleaser and all Year 10 students rose to the challenge and produced a range of outstanding dishes.

Congratulations to all Year 10 students who undertook Food Technology this year. Your diligence and motivation to succeed is to be commended and your teachers are very proud of you!

Year 10 Health students involved in the elective throughout 2023 were intrinsically motivated and pursued the importance of understanding major concepts including social justice, equality and equity. They paved their way through highly engaging classes based on the value of health and wellbeing at an individual level and its significance to their families, communities and globally. Throughout the year, they reviewed the lifespan stage, youth growth and development with a particular focus on developing / strengthening resilience, decreasing stress and learning how to apply coping strategies. A fantastic connection with an Indigenous community ‘Ampilatwatja’ was formed; students collaborated to organise health / dignity kits which were prepared and posted by the students.

Year 10 Health students, you have shone very brightly in 2023. Thank you for your incredible work; you are all superstars.

VCE Food Studies + Health and Human Development:

The ‘Health’ team could not be more impressed with the cohort of students who completed VCE Food Studies and VCE Health and Human Development. Throughout the year, all VCE students celebrated many successes. The students worked consistently in their chosen subject areas. They actively sought regular feedback and more importantly applied the feedback effectively to their work. They worked independently and collaborated with their peers, which strengthened their overall knowledge and application of content. These attributes enabled all students to enjoy their learning, emphasising that ‘knowledge is power’. The VCE Food Studies and Health and Human Development students never shy away from a challenge; their level of resilience was a springboard for academic success and personal growth.

To the Unit 3 + 4 Food Studies and Human Development classes of 2023, we wish you well on your life journey and we thank you for turning up and giving it your all. We are very proud of your achievements.

The ‘Health’ teachers and our kitchen Angels, Raelene and Charlotte, are incredibly blessed and impressed with the abundance of student learning that has taken place this year. We are all looking forward to watching our student’s learning expand even further in 2024.

Thank you to parents / guardians / carers for your ongoing support. Wishing you a happy and safe holiday break.
