Please find below this week's sports news and reminders.

WEEK AHEAD: 

  • Best of luck to the SMCC students competing in the Inter-School MTB series on Sunday 22 October at the Smithfield MTB Park (Crankworx site). Huge thank you to Mr Cahill for supporting our students at the event. 
     
  •  TCS Tennis Trials Paper Nomination Due: Wednesday 25 October.
     
  • Female JSS Teams: Meet Wednesday afternoon, 12:40pm outside HOB. 
     
  • Male JSS Teams: Meet Wednesday afternoon, 1:17pm outside HOB (there is a bye this week, the team will train instead.)
     
  • Senior Sport: Meet Tuesday afternoons, 1.27pm (Period 5) in Nazareth Pavilion.
     
  • SMCC Rugby League Year 7 Students: Training is on Tuesday afternoon from
    3.15pm - 4.30pm on the SMCC oval.

  • Presentation Night: Major Sports Awards to be presented on Monday, 13 November.
     
  • SPORT Presentation Assembly: JSS Awards, Extra Curricular Sports Awards, and other Sports Awards are to be presented on Tuesday, 14 November.
     
  • Bentley Park 7’s: Friday 27 October, 8.30am - 3.00pm.
     
  • SMCC 'Park Run' Takeover: Saturday 11 November on the Cairns Esplanade. 
    All within the SMCC community are invited to attend and participate.

SPORT GRANT FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES:

DID YOU KNOW...

  • Children who achieve 45 minutes a day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) perform better in writing, numeracy, and overall proficiency.
     
  • Children who participate in sports, particularly team sports for boys and individual sports for girls, spend less time playing electronic or computer games and are less likely to be sedentary overall.

SMCC  STUDENT SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS: 

  • Congratulations to Caitlin Jackson who was recently selected into the Bond University Bull Sharks Elite Premier League team in 2024. 
     
  • Congratulations to Louise Lane who competed in the 200m, 800m, and 400m at the 13-19 Years QLD School Sport Track and Field Championships. Louise qualified for the finals in all three events, with Louise earning a bronze medal in the QLD 400m final.  
     
  • Congratulations to the SMCC students selected into the Northern Pride Rugby League squads for 2024.

JUNIOR SPORT: Years 7, 8, 9 

 

JSS COMPETITION: 

  • SMCC Female Basketball Teams take on Cairns High. 
  • Female Teams Meet: Wednesday afternoon, 12:40pm outside HOB.
     
  • SMCC Male Teams have a buy this week and will train.
  • Male Teams Meet: Wednesday afternoon, 1:17pm outside HOB.

JSS Term 4 Draw:

 

SMCC JUNIOR SPORT PROGRAM: Wednesday Afternoons 1:17pm - 2:57pm

Year 7, 8, 9 Students (not participating in the JSS Competition) have been placed into the Junior Sport Program, which provides opportunities for students to engage in various sports options for Term 3 and Term 4.  

 

Junior Sports Program Options:

  • Soccer Program (Delivered by an accredited soccer coach)
  • Hockey Program (Delivered by a performance hockey coach)
  • Netball Program (Delivered by an advanced netball coach)
  • Sports Rotations (2-week rotations) and Sports include- Ten Pin Bowling, Golf, Boxing, Gym, Outdoor Fitness, Yoga, Cricket, and Volleyball.

Students participating in this program have been sent an email with all information and instructions.

SENIOR SPORT: Years 10 & 11 

SMCC SENIOR SPORT INTERHOUSE SPORTS COMPETITION: 

 All students are to meet in the Nazareth Pavilion every Tuesday at 1.27pm (Period 5) and are to wear their house shirts and bring a hat and water bottle.

 

Students who are not participating in the Interhouse Sports Competition can do Chess Club, Aspire to Teach Program, and/or Service and Justice group. 

 

Teams will compete against other teams for house points in the below sports:

  • Cricket
  • Basketball
  • Touch Football
  • Netball
  • Volleyball
  • Futsal

REMINDERS:

OCTOBER SPORTS CALENDAR:

 

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:

No mobile phones during Sport: This includes all sports groups travelling offsite and JSS teams. Students choosing to ignore these expectations will be issued with consequences as per the SMCC Behaviour Support Plan. 

 

Organisation: 

  • Read the Notices Located on the Student Portal each school day. 
  • Please check your emails daily. 
  • Bring a water bottle, and a hat, and wear the appropriate attire and footwear to every Sports lesson. 
  • If your sport is a fitness-based activity, you will need to bring a towel. 

 Behaviour and Engagement: 

  • Participate in the Sport/ Activity to the best of their ability.
  • Represent our college well when travelling offsite.
  • Demonstrate respectful and appreciative behaviour towards any outside provider facilitating a program along with a St Mary’s staff member.

Please note: Our Sports program involves some groups travelling offsite therefore please avoid making appointments during Tuesday and Wednesday sports.
