JAPANESE NEWS

The 4-year-old Kindergarten children enjoyed experiencing Japanese language and culture at our Japanese Fun Day.  Many people in our BHNPSK community helped make it a wonderful day!

A huge thank you to our group of fantastic Grade 4 helpers who guided the Kinder children through the activities with great compassion. Their leadership, patience and enthusiasm made a big impact and helped the morning run smoothly.

We’re also so grateful to the wonderful Japanese background parents from our school community who gave their time and skills to help and to the other parent volunteers who kindly sewed the hachimaki (headbands) in preparation for the day.

Children made and tasted onigiri, a popular Japanese picnic food. They shaped their rice, added ingredients like corn, mayo, cooked egg or furikake (Japanese rice sprinkles), and wrapped it in nori (seaweed).

They also created their own hachimaki, which are headbands worn in Japan at festivals, sports days and during moments when the wearer needs extra energy, determination, or perseverance.

Our origami cherry blossoms were added to a class tree. Those who waited to eat their onigiri enjoyed a “hanami” picnic, just like in Japan, as we admired our beautiful tree.

We ended the morning with a bang, literally! During a drumming incursion, the children had the chance to try real Japanese drums. The biggest one was much taller than a four-year-old!

Thank you again to the wonderful Grade 4 students and parent volunteers who helped make our Japanese Fun Day so much fun!
